Sad news... I went to go check on our little chickie Pip Squeak and to my horror he wasn't breathing. I watched really closely and no movement.. So I picked him up and still nothing Our first baby chick that we hatched has passed away I'm very sad..

I am so sorry! I know this can happen but when you have one that it happens to it can be so very upsetting.

I found a keet that had hatched from eggs left in the nest after the mothers hatched them out and took off with them. I brought the egg(s) in and put in the hatcher and it hatched out but Sat. night (or should I say Sunday morning?) when I got home from Sam's it was laying in the brooder and looked dead. I reached in and found it limp and fairly unresponsive but put it over into the group of chicks to see if body warmth would help it. It is now doing great so I haven't a clue what happened. Probably knocked itself out on the aquarium glass (keets can be really wacky).

There is some trial and error in hatching and raising them and it can be painful but you learn a lot like this, too.

Thank you all for your overwhelming support.. This was very hard for us, but I love my chickens way too much so I will not give up on hatching. I realize that this stuff kinda goes with the territory of raising chickens. From time to time (even though we don't always expect it) we may lose chickens (even the smallest ones).. Thankfully my oldest daughter took it a lot better than I did last night. She came to me and said "Well Mama, at least we got to see him hatch. We'll hatch some more soon and they'll be okay mama." It was so sweet that she was comforting me last night.

What a sweet daughter you have. And I am sorry that you lost the chick. It is always hard to lose one...no matter how old it is or young it is.

We are not having to much fun here. One of the Duccle/booted bantam chicks, 2 weeks old cant walk and is going backwards. Tried to give it vitamins, to see if it would help, but it is not doing well. Seems there is nothing else we can do. Then we had 8 chicks hatch this weekend, 4 duccle/booted, and 4 wyandottes. One isnt doing well. It was so wet when it hatched it actually had its wing almost glued. Well today it isnt doing well. hopeing it will improve. We also lost one of the D'anver chicks. So yes, hatching has its ups and downs.

Aww, It does sound like y'all not having a good week.. I hope the little ones get to feeling better soon.. I'm very sorry y'all lost some as well. Maybe things will start looking up for us both soon.. I know it's kind of a thing we must get used to from time to time though.. I just wish it was more far and few times than the way it has been lately..

Does it get any easier the more you deal with it? I am nervous about this hatch. I get so emotionally involved. When I helped one of my eggs last time and it was so sick I had to put it down I was devastated. It was so hard. I am vowing not to help this time BUT you know how that goes. It does break my heart to hear all the sadness and troubles that everyone is having. I know Sam had a rough week last week too. I keep telling myself that if something happens to the chicks then I can just hatch some more but I get so attached. Hugs to everyone.

Oh my goodness, I hate to hear that about Pip Squeak! So sad...they truly are like babies to us! We lost a baby barred rock and it was very emotional for all of us. Thankfully, the rest have made it so far (even with the hawks circling and my 8 year old keeping vigil while they learn to free roam a little bit).

Susan~ That is so funny about the crowing!!! We have only one crowing so far...one of our barred rocks boys, Jaws. He sounds so funny!

Just reebok~ So glad to have another midlander on here, too! We are new to this so the more help the better. I haven't heard of them but may give them a call to see if they want my two roos that we have to get rid of! I did have a guy that I get eggs from locally (who has lots of chickens) offer to take him...but he would just take him to the flea market to sell. He's so happy here. But, logically I know we can't keep four roosters! I've been trying to detach from him a bit. Poor guys!

If anyone does have another pullet to give away or sell, we're definitely interested since it looks like we're only going to have 3 (1 EE & 2 barred rocks)! I would like at least 1-2 more since I have 3 boys (including my hubby) that LOVE eggs every morning!
