South Dakota Thread!

Yeah, darn Roosters! Mine sliced up my favorite hen so I finally cut his spurs and she has a saddle now. He seems to go through phases with favorites.

Are you rehoming or culling Lieutenant?
I've thought about culling mine a few times but I can't do it yet!

I am wanting a nicer Roo also though, it's always a feat getting things done in the backyard.

I could rehome him, he is not mean. He is a fair rooster, and seems to do well with free ranging, and when I free range it is in a pasture with a crick and draws.

I definitely don't live in South Dakota, but I decided to make this thread for SD dwellers!

How hard is it to care for chickens in winter? It sounds like it would be very difficult! That is for a Californian ! My dads from South Dakota and he grew up on a farm with chickens so he's told me about it a bit.

Trying to get this thread here- https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/find-your-states-thread.270925/
I live in SD and my chickens do excellent in the winter except for frostbitten combs

I had a Rhode Island Red bantam rooster and he won Grand Champion at county fair and top 5 in his class at state then over the winter he lost all his comb points and I couldn't show him but he still looked good except for his comb. he died this spring. here is a picture of him
Same here, my roo lost the tips of his comb. We put supplemental heat on during the very bad days.
