Several Garters throughout the Americas including Alaska and central America. The common Garter can be found the northern most part of the US in Alaska.

cool article in Wiki.

I used to keep a common Garter (wild caught) in a twenty gallon Vivariaum. Half water half land and plants. He lived off gold fish. Pretty cool setup. I had an undergravel filter under the land part which was aquarium gravel the water would flow through the filter and bubble up through a tube on the land side to make a little water fall. I had a heater in the water which kept the tank at a constant temperature and branches and plants for the snake to crawl about in. when hed get hungry hed have a fish. Had to duct tape screen over the top though he was an escape artist. I eventually returned him to the wild after keeping him for about three or four months. They eat frogs too but fish were convenient.

Deb that sounds like a cool set up for the snake but I am glad to hear that you set it free. There is nothing like freedom ! I think that garter snakes are pretty much all over the US. We used to have a big family of them living under our stone porch. One day while digging in the soil as a fervent gardener frequntly does, I found one the size of a pencil on the tip of my shovel. I brought it over to my son for him to see it and the little bugger reared up and started hissing and we laughed so hard. Poor little baby was so fierce .

nah... just wash your hand... LOL... you can't get any major disease from a snake bite... i've been bit hundreds of times by snakes before... it's worst when they poop on you... that makes me want to fling them back to the floor...

Good to know

Now besides the obvious fact of being dumped on. What makes it worse than being bit?

well, if you haven't gotten musked/dumped on... it really doesn't sound that bad... but while they are doing it, they whip and snap their tails around trying to launch it at your face... it will burn your eyes, taste horrible and get all over your clothes... it's gross... i've never gotten hit in the face, but have had the stink on my shirts for a while... especially at reptile shows... now i take baby wipes... LOL...

orly...¿ i thought they were always asian water garter snakes... well that's what the petshop has them at... LOL... you learn something new on the internet at least three times a day...

yeah, my setup was somewhat the same... i loved watching them go after goldfish and stuff underwater... i started out with three, and somehow, ended up with over 30 snakes at one time... and i was like 15 or something... it was a long time ago... i sold them all to the petshop, and got me my first brazilian rainbow boa... ah, the memories...

What kind of snake is it?

I use to live in Desert Hot Springs and found a snake in my coop eating eggs! It looked similar to the snake you caught. Then last year (I'm in Moreno Valley Now) I found a Gopher Snake in my garden.

I know I am being obvious here for those who know snakes but there are some who havent been around them ever. So here goes.

WRT snakes The non venomous ones are only a danger to chicks and eggs. The venomous one are a danger to chicks and eggs as well but are also there's that whole surprize and strike thing.....

That's where having the coop cleared around the outside of places for snakes to hide. And having hardware cloth or snake proof wire over any openings of the coop. Hardware cloth even the plastic kind is enough to keep them out. I am certain we are going to have a bumper crop of snakes this year because its been wetter. Even in urban settings so don't put your hands where you cant see what your grabbing.
