I used to keep a common Garter (wild caught) in a twenty gallon Vivariaum. Half water half land and plants. He lived off gold fish. Pretty cool setup. I had an undergravel filter under the land part which was aquarium gravel the water would flow through the filter and bubble up through a tube on the land side to make a little water fall. I had a heater in the water which kept the tank at a constant temperature and branches and plants for the snake to crawl about in. when hed get hungry hed have a fish. Had to duct tape screen over the top though he was an escape artist. I eventually returned him to the wild after keeping him for about three or four months. They eat frogs too but fish were convenient.
