I wanted to join the Air Force after I took a business trip with my uncle (in Air Force) to the Pentagon but my father said some thing to me that I cant repeat on here. Sad thing is that I listened to him & didn't join
I wanted to join the army but my uncle who was a Lt Cl told me it was not something that went with my personality.... he was right! Lol I don't think I would have lasted long. I do send packages through anysoldier.com when I can though and try to support Veteran's Groups here. I woudl have mixed emotions if my daughters joined the armed forces. Pride yes, but fearful for their safety from fellow cadets as well. I wish I had more faith in command protecting our female troops from rape and harassment unfortunately.

Maggie, you look lovely! I'm envious of your long gorgeous hair.

I've been putting items on my etsy shop.  Slow going, finding the right pictures, writing descriptions, etc.  I bought a desktop photo "studio" which takes great pictures - very professional.  For bigger items, I'm using my cousin's dressmaker dummy dressed in my store tshirt.  Lighting for those is a pain, as is background.  *sigh*

Way to go suzanne! Keep at it, add something everyday and before you know it, your shop will be complete.

I remember one of my most embarrassing moments was when my mom told a group of her girlfriends that I wanted to be an astronaut .got angry at her and them. The great thing is that my step dad new I could be and do anything.he was much more encouraging then my mom ever was.

Girls can do anything boys can do!

So sorry...

OMG...so true.  I was born in '51.  Played on the streets of Manhattan with the boys. I was a classic tomboy but also did some girly things like ballet. I always felt lucky in that I could do boy things s well as girl things.  I am a gold medalist in the Empire State Games, in archery, have hunted and brought venison home, gutted it, skinned, and butchered as well as cooked it, shoot guns, I have a wonder DH who relishes in all the things I do. As you said, we were able to do it all.  Raised 5 sons and grandmi to 7.  I've had a great life., Have traveled all over skiing and scuba diving. Love computers and never want to ever stop learning or experiencing something new. And.....here we are!  Raising Chickens!  WHOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!!:hugs

The Empire State Games? Wow! That's amazing! I used to be a really good rider and was inches away from trying out for the US Equestrian Team. Only reason I couldn't do it, was that my family couldn't afford the Olympic level horse I needed. Back in the 70's we didn't have corporate sponsors to offset costs.

I'm an expectant chickee mother and currently just check into BYC when I get the email notifications but I've got to say, these last few posts have just solidified my interest in this group.
You guys are awesome!

This is definitely a group worth hanging out with.

OK one of my little polis chicks I got from Christina is keeping its head down almost tucked between it's legs. Has anyone ever had a problem like this? I have been reading about wry neck. Apparently they give them vitamin e and b.
Hey Roberta you out there? She has been eating and drinking. I don't want to stress her anymore by isolating her unless I have to.

Carol, wry neck (torticollis) can be caused by vitamin E and/or Selenium deficiency, injury or neurological disease. You can give the chick 400mg of Vit E , 3 x's daily. Easiest way is to nip open the capsule with the tp of your teeth and squeeze it into the beak. Also give half a dropperful of PolyViSol baby vitamins without iron once daily. Hopefully you will see improvement in a week or so.

I was born in the '70's - ok the early 70's - and I want to tell you how much I appreciate everything done by the generations before me. I was lucky enough to grow up in the "Free to Be You and Me" era, when Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman and Charlie's Angels were on tv (and I was too young to understand jiggle tv). I really did grow up thinking I could become anything I wanted to, and I am doing my best to pass that on to my daughters. We have been to Disney World twice now, and both times the first thing I take everyone to is the Hall of Presidents. This time I said, 'Before you are grandmothers, there will be a female president.' My youngest daughter said, "Yes mommy, my sister Jane!" So proud! I really do believe there will be a female president before I am gone, whether it is my child or not. I sort of hope it isn't my daughter and that it happens sooner than that. I take great pride in voting in every single election I can, and make a point of telling them that women were the last group to be granted the right to vote. I don't intend to be the generation that lets equality go.

I also thank the hens every day when they give me eggs, it's wonderful to see my girls do it as well. I am very weepy lately thinking about having to buy eggs from the store in a few weeks. I hope I can get to the farmers markets at least.

I will vote for your daughter when she runs for president! Try not to be sad, you have so many new experiences to look forward to in Texas. Why don't you start a blog to chronicle your move and your new life? You are taking writing classes, right? You can blog about everything from your new garden to decorating your new home. All of us here in NY can follow your journey and post comments on you blog. You never know...you might even become the next Pioneer Woman. :). (I love her blog).

we're. You able to get chicks for Easter for your children?

I haven't picked them up yet but on Saturday I'm headed to Long Island Poultry in Flanders to pick up two Pekin ducks and four chicks. I'm SO excited! The DH is less than enthralled though. He'll be alright once he realizes the chickens don't interfere with the sofa OR the tv ;) But seriously, please tell me there's a trading post where I can hock one grumpy hubby for some chicken gear.

Tell me more about the symptoms.
Tina gave the same advice that I would give for wry neck... include massage.
She may be tucking for another reason....

Chiming in from Central NY, I love the idea of a blog. I had followed a blog by gryeyes, or something close to that spelling, when she moved from one place to another and retired. She had a lovely way of writing, and it seemed to help her too as the ups and downs occurred. I know when I write I can get a new perspective, and feedback is helpful. You would have readers from NY, and other places, and I bet Texas people would like to read, too. I firmly believe you will find a way to have chickens at some point.

She is lethargic and keeping her head down almost between her legs. She hasn't experienced any trauma .not doing anything differently then I have in the passed.
Chick starter crumble and fresh water.
Why is it predominately silkies that I have been reading about.
I'll try the vit. Supplements and PT. thanks
