Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Carol, I want to say thank you for what you did for that man. So many people are content to shrug their shoulders and act helpless. You are awesome. And I agree, take me to the vets!

Gah! I've tried editing my post to no avail.

I'm going to to try to get some of these little hunnies to pose with my namesake (Hyacinth flowers) in a little while.

And what's with New Yorkers and krullers? We had the same thing down South but called them coffee sticks. I had to run out this morning to get them for my Father-in-Law.

Does anyone know if I can give these little buggers diced apple pieces?

I personally wouldn't give them anything except the chick starter and water. You don't want them to get the runs. Their food is nutritionally balanced

Woken up by sweet 7 year old granddaughter at 5am. "Can we watch a movie or play a game?" Sure, Jessie. So we watched Heidi on Netflix until we got hungry for breakfast. Cheesy eggs and matzah. Then at 9am I was out at the ChickArena improvising a temporary "playpen" for my four hens out in the backyard. Set a water bowl, feed bowl and makeshift nesting box (recycling bin turned on its side and lined with woodshavings) in the playpen. Then took down all the heavy duty tarps that enclose the whole Arena all winter to keep out the winter winds. Then spent the next three and a half hours emptying every last thing out of the ChickArena so I could do the annual major Spring cleanup. Took out bowls, strainers, plastic bags, clothespins, jars of dried mealworms, boxes of DE, grit and calcium bits, four big metal trash bins filled with layerfeed, UltraKibble, scratch and BOSS; brushes, brooms, rakes, stormwindow panes, and on and on. A year's worth of flotsam and jetsam.

At 2:30 "Sam" and his two friends arrived. Sam answered my craigslist ad about a month ago: the ad offered my year's worth of chicken manure/woodshavings free of charge to anyone who would shovel it ALL out of the ChickArena and take away half of it for their gardens, and leave the other half with me for my gardens. There were a total of at least nine huge black leaf-collection plastic bags. I don't know for sure because DH began adding it to our vegetable garden's seven-month old compost heap immediately. Should be good and "ripe" by May 15th for sure.

Took them about an hour to empty the year's worth of Deep Litter Method's stuff. And so, at about 4pm I turned my hose on full force and blasted the playhouse coop, and the little wooden henhouse and all the walls and ceiling of the ChickArena. Then scrubbed it all down by hand, using a solution of "natural soap" and Oxine and water. Then hose rinsed it all.

After two hours, the sopping wet ground in the Arena perked enough to let the chickens back in and I finally put them to bed at 7:00 and then raced the last of the Passover visitors to the train station for a 7:30 train back to Brooklyn. (Some kinfolk stayed three days, some seven days and one stayed eight days. ) I am EXHAUSTIPATED ! (sic)

Of the 16 guests at the Seder and for the rest of the Passover, three were here with stomach flu, four with burning sore throat head cold and the 9 year old had a fever of over 102. And a fine ole time was had by all. Lots of chocolate covered matzah and chocolate egg creams were consumed. And my daughter's cooking and baking and roasting was yummy delicious. (Had the last of her brisket for supper tonight.)

I shall now indulge with either a shot of Southern Comfort or two Advils (never both) and take to my bed. Tomorrow I have to wash and rinse and dry the flotsam and jetsam and store it away and also will empty about ten bags of fresh woodshavings into the ChickArena.

Roberta, I'm ready for the two new girls whenever you're ready to bring 'em.

Smiles and waves to you all,
-Carolyn

Carolyn, you amaze and astound me! may I be blessed with that much energy. We visited family out near Buffalo for the holiday, and we had brunch at the Roycroft Inn. The Copper Workshop aka the gift store was closed but I peeked through the windows and saw many, many beautiful things that would have been painfully lugged onto the flight had it been open. All of it made me think of you and your husband's gorgeous tile/pottery collection.

The girls go back to school tomorrow and boy am I ever ready for that! Love them so much but oh it has been enough already. :)

Happy Easter...girls are singing their Easter song for the entire neighborhood this morning..
Got up super early to go to Sayville to the bakery and of course nothing is ever straightforward for me. Line out the door and ten minutes into the wait an elderly man (84) ahead of me decides to pass out.why is it that unless you look straight at a person ,point your finger at them and give them a command they won't do anything. Suzanne maybe your daughter will know the answer to that. I did not yell but had to raise my voice to get anyone to do what I told them to do.i got pretty scared, he was breathing but for the life of me I couldn't get a pulse. Hadnt taken his blood pressure meds. Didn't want to go with the ambulance, wanted to drive home. I was having none of that. Talked to his wife told her he was heading to south side. Hopefully everything works out for him
Ps sold out of my favorite cruller....( for you newbies ,I am joking)
Carol

I am so looking forward to grandkids.

Me too. I call it payback. My kids are still too young, but heaven help them when they DO have kids. Sharpies and crayons for all!

I'm a little worried this morning, my kitty seems to be feeling poorly. back in November we found out he has crystals in his bladder, and 1300.00 later, he was feeling better, gaining weight and looking good. Last night we got home and he was rather lethargic-he's not even 2, so lethargic isn't in his vocabulary. He drank some water, and took a treat so I wasn't overly worried, just figured he probably ran into a wall (he does this) or tangled with the Maltese and she got a good shot in before running and kiyiing like a puppy.

This morning, he won't take water, and just threw up a little fluid. SO-as soon as his vet opens a visit is in order. I'm leaning towards he ate some thing he's regretting, or a hairball. He did use the litter box this morning, so I know he's not blocked. He may even be constipated, his belly seems a little hard. He doesn't normally eat strange things-he's a finicky guy, but you never know. We did lock up all the easter candy, so that's not it.

The vomiting didn't really alarm me-he's a medium haired cat, so he does get hairballs on occasion. My poor Kairi, he's always such a happy active guy, this just breaks my heart.
