Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Thanks to Al!
You will enjoy another lunacy-related anecdote then...for the past two weeks I have been hearing the constant presence of red tail hawks. A family of them were residents in our neighborhood last summer and I've seen a few this year. I was thinking that my chicken radar was on overdrive though, because I kept hearing them, but rarely spotted them.
Yesterday I finally figured it out. It's the **** mocking bird that nested in our yard. It's mocking the hawk!!! And me too I suppose!!!
It's dead on. ( Not so much with the helicopters I heard it try to copy the other day... Nearly peed myself when I figured out what that bizarre noise was).

I do miss having my morning chats with the girls, but I do get up to see them lots in the summer. They definitely have the life up there; I can't free range here ( between my hunter cat and my citified neighbors its a bad idea all around).
You sound like the group who will get a kick out of this but not think I'm looney... Gotta bring my newbie flock with me for a visit to " the farm" next week. Chickie road trip! :) will set up a temporarary coop up there and they and their future flock mates can eyeball each other through the fence.[/quot

This group thinking anything chicken related is looney.....
The sane ones make crochet chicken bras to carry around their single babies in....
We blame Al ,he started this crazy site and we love him for it.....

Yep, I'm always getting blamed for something. Glad it was for this, though. Not many things turn out this well. Sorry I haven't kept up as much as I should have. There are days where my mailbox is so full of posts from this thread I can't get to read them all. I am really happy so many of you have made friends here.

Our chickens here have been doing well, except for some slowdown in production. Now that they are nearing two years of laying they are cutting down by about half. Either that or they are just a bunch of slackers! They still enjoy seeing me come out there to feed and water them, which amazes me considering I don't spend nearly as much time with them as I did when they were young. I keep trying to find the best feed for them and presently have them on Agway's Hearty Hen feed. After all the feeds I've tried I can say that I can't see too much difference in the major brands. The girls seem to do well on all of them. As long as the feed is fresh and a quality brand, it keeps them healthy.

We welcomed our first grandson this past month. What a joy and blessing he has been. My wife finds him the apple of her eye. She can't get enough of him. Grandkids are awesome!

Would be nice if the sun could shine more than a few days in a row. We're starting to grow Webbed feet here. Most of you out on The Island must feel like ducks yourselves. This has been one long winter and spring into summer, so far.

Again, glad all us loons have found our happy place. You all have a great weekend. :)

So, my better judgement lapsed and I got two teeny baby turkeys. I must have lost my mind. But they're SO SWEET, I can't even tell you. They already think I'm their mama, and peep for me when I leave the room.

They'll never learn to walk though, since the kids have yet to put them down.

There's far worse things than more snuggly babies to love.

Hi Al!! Congratulations on your new grandson! What a wonderful part of life grandchildren are. My MIL has 17 grandchildren, and the first one just got married, so I guess a great grand isn't far off. She never tires of them, even now. Enjoy him, and all my best.

Hi everyone, wishing you all an early Happy 4th of July. We're headed to the Jersey Shore for the week where I'll do nothing but worry about my dogs, chickens, house, flowers and garden and count the days until I get back. Nah, who I am kidding, once my feet hit the sand, I'll be living easy for the week! Enjoy!

Have a wonderful and safe trip! We leave for our first summer camping trip tomorrow morning, somehow, in this mugginess, my a/c house seems much more fun than Indian Island...

AAARRRRGH. Went out to check on the girls this morning...and one is NOT a girl. Peri, my slightly neurotic partridge showgirl...CROWED.

Roberta, can I interest you in a really pretty showgirl? (er, handsome...) You can even keep the name since it is a unisex name...Periscope...

Just when I started thinking I had imagined crowing, Ed (the former Edna) let go yesterday with a couple of very nicely performed "cockadoodledoos". And of course I'm busy all weekend, so I have no way to make arrangements for a new home for him.

Any suggestions, other than a chicken dinner?

When I spoke to Renee at Schaefer Farms in NJ (Ed's original home) she said she didn't think she had any more EEs and I didn't feel it was worth taking the hellish drive to Flemington just to drop off a bird without getting a replacement. Now that there's regular crowing going on, I may change my mind on that. Anyone for a trip to NJ on Monday morning???

If I wasn't going to be camping-I'd be up for a ride! If you want to wait until next week-I'm in! I only had 3 chicks hatch, and Wayne (Long Island Poultry) only has Turkeys. I'd like to get 2 or 3 more babies.

Peri is just SO pretty, I cannot possibly think of eating him, even though we don't get along very well.
