Hi Joe and
welcome-byc.gif

This is a great thread, and a great website. I'm new to chickens too and I've gotten so much information and support here.

There's quite a debate about heat/no heat in the coop. Three of my chickens are only 5 weeks old, so I'm using supplemental heat for them. But I have to say, as uncomfortable as it makes me, I'm one foot in the no heat camp. I only have 5 hens total, so I worry that they can't generate enough heat of their own to keep themselves warm. But they would find a way to keep warm in nature, right? As Roberta said, check the threads on coop design. You'll find lots of information there, and plenty of debate. Just make sure you leave LOTS of time to kill!

I hope you weathered the storm okay where you are. We had lots of wind and rain. My run flooded, the babies wouldn't go up to the coop, and I was on my hands and knees trying to catch them to put them up myself. We all got very wet and very cold!

Post some pics of your chickies! I LOVE pictures...

Joe, welcome to the thread. Glad you could join us.

We're still without power. Hope you made it through alright. The main thing is that the girls are all well.

Hi, all!

The vet called and Jack Is improved today. Luckily I called this morning and left my cell number as the phones are still out.

Got the generator humming and we're cooking on a camp stove. All the comforts of home. We have no idea when power is going to
Be restored. Running an electric heater to keep warm.

Suzanne, I'm sure Bobby and I would get along really well.

Typing on this iPhone is a pain. Can't wait for the power and broadband to be back up. There are trees and cables down all over the place. We had two apple trees fall over that we planted last year. I managed to
Straighten them out. The siding is damaged where the tree fell on the side of the house.

Hang in there, guys. Hope all is well on your end.

Glade Your Dog Is Improving. I Am Very Attached To My Dogs And Rush Them To The Vet As Soon As I See Some Thing Off. My Husband Teases Me About It. He Says That If My Chihuahua "daisy" Is Shaking, Hurry & Rush Her To The Vet But At 3 Lbs. I Dont Take Any Chances With Her. You Are Able To Be On Here So Its Not That Bad. We Lost Tv, Internet, Phone Service For A Week With Irene And It Was Like We Were Back In The Old Days Of Actually Sitting Around Just Talking Which Was Nice. I Met People On My Block That I Did Not See In Years. I Hatched Out More Silkie Chicks This Week End, All Blue. Presley Must Be In Love With That Blue Girl That I Got From Pa. The Day Of Irene Storm Week End. Never Had That Happen Before, Usually Get A Few Splash From Daddies Side.

My chickies are still not going up the ladder on their own. I watched them for a little bit and they CAN use the ladder. Bobby thinks they're afraid to go up to the coop with the big girls. I put the heat/light on for them in the hopes that will lure them up. My old bones can't take kneeling on the bricks trying to wrestle them into the coop!

Thanks. I can understand you being worried if your chihuahua is 3 lbs. small dogs can chill easily and probably are more sensitive to any illness as they do not have the body mass to fight off infection or other health issues.

We got the power back and hour ago. I was able to use my iPhone to sen the posts today. Now I'm back on the iPad. Much faster with the Internet back up. Thought we were going to be out for two or three days. Lots of places around here will be out for a few more days at least. There were tree crews from all over the state here and out of area electrical contractors to hook up lines again.

Suzanne, I think it is going to be a matter of time before they go up on their own. Bobby is probably right about them being afraid of the big girls. It might take until they feel safe, which who knows how long that takes. They might do it when it gets too cold to want to spend the night outside. It has to be frustrating. I know it would get to me. I have enough problem getting out to the coop in the morning now that the temps are In the 30s then.
