Hi Joe and
This is a great thread, and a great website. I'm new to chickens too and I've gotten so much information and support here.
There's quite a debate about heat/no heat in the coop. Three of my chickens are only 5 weeks old, so I'm using supplemental heat for them. But I have to say, as uncomfortable as it makes me, I'm one foot in the no heat camp. I only have 5 hens total, so I worry that they can't generate enough heat of their own to keep themselves warm. But they would find a way to keep warm in nature, right? As Roberta said, check the threads on coop design. You'll find lots of information there, and plenty of debate. Just make sure you leave LOTS of time to kill!
I hope you weathered the storm okay where you are. We had lots of wind and rain. My run flooded, the babies wouldn't go up to the coop, and I was on my hands and knees trying to catch them to put them up myself. We all got very wet and very cold!
Post some pics of your chickies! I LOVE pictures...
