Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I have a question. If my some of my hens have not laid yet and I am not using artificial light through the fall/ winter is it possible they will not lay until next spring? They hatched at the end of March.

I have 3 girls that hatched April 1 and they have not started laying yet. I'm hoping any day now.i don't use artificial light in the winter and I get very few eggs. We might get a few if any. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Smudge! I live in Miller Place-a short hop, skip and jump from you!

Where in NYC? I'm originally from Bayside, Queens (and before that, Jerome Ave, Bronx...)
I'm in Jamaica, Queens :) Where are you now?

Welcome, what the heck were they doing at the race tracks? Yes I know before I ask this of the wise cracks I'm about to get, so let them fly....
Welcome
Thanks! It seems like people have been dumping their unwanted chickens at Belmont Park. My cochin and two wyandottes are from there.

:)
I'm not sure they'd wait, but eggs may be few and far between. They should be laying though. Have you taken a look through the yard, and under stuff? Sometimes my girls send me on an egg hunt.

Quick story related to egg hunts...

Two weeks ago, I was putting the girls to bed (locking up the hen house and coop) and when I counted, my BO, Lovey was nowhere to be seen. My husband and kids all came out and we searched everywhere. I was so upset since it was almost dark, and we have tons of raccoons. All of a sudden my oldest son yells, "MOM! I found her!" Sure enough there was Lovey, under the small propane tank, which is like a big one on it's side, pretty as you please....on 19 (YES, I know-what the heck???) eggs. They were all different colors and sizes so I knew ALL the girls were in cahoots, SO we emptied her cache, and put her in the hen house. 2 weeks later, all the girls still roam over to the propane tank looking for the eggs, clucking away at each other.

Little creeps. :lau

That's a funny story! If my girls are laying somewhere else, the dogs are probably beating me to the eggs! (At least they don't eat the chickens!)

Thanks! I hope I'll find some eggs soon! It's like Christmas each time a new one lays its first egg.

Miller Place. It's 2 towns east of Port Jefferson. My husband was a firefighter in 126 truck on Princeton Street, Jamaica! (Now he's back in the Bronx-as a Lt.) When he makes Captain, he hopes to return to Jamaica!

GOOD Morning Everybody~ SallySec...where'd all our Hudson Valley peeps disappear to? :-( It has been pretty lonely over there! How have you been? What's new in your flock ? Hope all is well~ Mr. Blue the Roo seems to prefer petite blondes and has taken a liking to Rapunzel, our buff silkie. She's playing hard to get though. Otherwise, not much is going on. Trying to figure out how to keep the waterer from freezing and building some kind of wind block for the run. With temps plunging into the 40's at night lately, I'm starting to think about winterizing the coops and run. What do you do?

You guys are REALLY cold up there! Out here we have the 50's at night, and 60's during the day this week. It's supposed to get warmer by the end of the week, so I have to hold off on putting shorts in the attic.
My girls were lazy this morning, clucking at me when I opened the henhouse. "No, ma, we're all snuggled up and not getting up yet"
