Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

So I caught my 6th raccoon this morning. Apparently, they ADORE peanut butter on bread. After they got both my poults a few weeks ago (I'm still heartbroken, so I didn't post about it) I have declared war on raccoons.

I've just started the process of joining the volunteer FD out here, so I can go to EMT school and get a JOB. The FDNY may be pulling Danny from regular FD hours and putting him and 4 other (UN) lucky members from each battalion on a task force for building inspection, and his hours would be 4 days a week, for less money, and unable to work side work...Scary. VERY scary.
Everyone have a great Wednesday!

GOOD Morning Everybody~ SallySec...where'd all our Hudson Valley peeps disappear to? :-( It has been pretty lonely over there! How have you been? What's new in your flock ? Hope all is well~ Mr. Blue the Roo seems to prefer petite blondes and has taken a liking to Rapunzel, our buff silkie. She's playing hard to get though. Otherwise, not much is going on. Trying to figure out how to keep the waterer from freezing and building some kind of wind block for the run. With temps plunging into the 40's at night lately, I'm starting to think about winterizing the coops and run. What do you do?
Morning, you are always welcome here. I spent the later part of school in New Windsor, my mom is still there and my sister is in Cornwall. I just nail up sheets of plywood for a wind break and use an electric waterer. I have to run an extension cord but it works. Welcome...we'll have to get coffee next time I come up to see my mom.

Sorry you lost your little turkeys..
I hope things work out for your husband..I know they will.
Good luck with your new adventure, can't wait to hear all the stories..

Hi everybody. Wish this weather on Long Island would make up its mind. So, the original 5 are at 23 weeks and the 2 DB's and GLW still aren't laying. By the time they decide to do so they'll slow or stop due to the decreasing day light...will it hurt them if I decide to artificially light them up?
The 3 new girls are growing quickly, feathers coming on wing tips...gotta get my rear going to finish their little coop till they are big enough to join the other ladies.
So again, Hudson Valley people, hope to be one of you within the next hear and a half...less if possible. I know it's bad timing, but just applied for my teaching certificate for NYS in elementary Ed. We hope to move to the New Windsor area as my sister in law and brother in law live up there. We visited them on New Years Eve and didn't want to leave. I'm hoping I can find a job, even if only subbing. I've always been told that as a male going for elem. teacher I should find "something"...I'll take anything to get up there...so beautiful, quiet, great people. My brother in law is from there and his family all lives there...great people.
Gotta go, heard flapping through the window...Lucky flew the coop...lol
