Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hello! My bf and I live in Northern Westchester and we just ordered our first batch of chicks due in April. Of course I'm insanely excited and am doing as much research as possible before they come. I just posted in the NY thread, and Jerseyhen was kind enough to direct me over here :) I was wondering if any of you near me feed your chickens organic and if you do, where you've found the best deals? I haven't found any feed stores with better prices than the other yet, but I'm willing to go pretty far and buy in bulk if I can. I'm also wondering if anyone knows anywhere I can buy bulk organic grain from? Thanks :)

Oh, did I mention how excited I am to get these little pipsqueaks? :)

I'm so glad to have found this forum, and this thread! Thanks again Jerseyhen!

http://www.lakevieworganicgrain.com/ they deliver bulk grain throughout NY. There are a few other grain mills, but most do not carry organic. I have been looking for someone to split a bulk delivery with, so if you or anyone else is interested (I am willing to do bulk conventional if organic prices are too high)... Cochecton Mills in NY has really great prices on conventional grain.

I'd seriously love to do that. Probably won't be looking at it until about June, but I'll definitely get in touch with you when the time comes if you'd still be interested. If we could get a few people together on an order I bet it would be a great way to save money on organic. I'd probably consider conventional too, but atm I'm hoping we'll be able to make organic work, though we'll see how it goes with the cost.

Hello, there. same to you how many do you have? I'm in Lindenhurst. if have 17 maybe 16 if the roo doesn't learn to be a lil less noisy. anyone else from "the island".
hi Lindy chick. I'm in Ridge. I'm in the same boat with my roo and same number of birds.

Welcome JD, and Iris if I haven't said so before...

JD how many birds do you plan on having?
I know you old timers that's hysterical...
I'm asking 'cause storing bulk grain makes me nervous. Sorry thats the microbiologist in me.
I don't know where you are in relation to Chester NY but there is a Tractor supply there. Jersey hen and I have made that our own personal chick swap pull-off. They'll have organic.

Christina my first part of my Burpee shipment arrived yesterday. I search through seed stock and have it with me at the show. If you change your mind and need a place to crash my offer still stands.

How do you put your location on that long island map?

Lindy Chick - where do you buy your feed? I'm in West Islip and drive out to Hay Loft in East Islip.

I have 1 bantam Aracuna, 2 barred rocks, 4 Aracuna, 1 RIR, 1 cochin mix, 2 black astralops, 2 black stars, 1 bantam Mille Fleur Duccle roo, 1 mixed roo, 1 "exotic" as per McMuray. They are fun!!!

I have pictures of it being built. I'll post from my phone later today. This cold has been brutal taking care of my horses in manorville & the chickens here has been a challenge for me & them.

This was the only picture I could find. I thought I had more. The mother in law was here that day :(.The part above the plastic fencing is all screen. I need to make it pretty in the spring.

Hi irischick. Yeah mr roo is not crowing all the time. I can have a roo here as long as the neighbors don't complain. Just don't want that to happen. He maybe going to freezer camp.
