Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Honestly, I know from experience that some (hawks) hang around all winter.

Summer is the best time here, as the yard is so overgrown, they have mega coverage.

Suzanne, the problem is that as the Pickins get slimmer in the winter, your chickens will be like someone is ringing a dinner bell for the hawks. Might be a good idea for your peace of mind not to let them range at all in the winter. There won't be much for your girls to find outside anyway, and the covered run is certainly big enough for them.

Here's a great link I think we all will be interested in for attracting crows. http://www.crows.net/food.html

Seems
like this might just work for keeping the hawks at bay. Crows are smart and it shouldn't take long for them to realize you want them around. Free (except for the feed) guardian birds might be all the rage in a couple of years if this works.

I have to go to Agway today, and guess what I'm going to buy? Loads of peanuts!!!

Roberta, how have you been feeling lately?

Thanks for asking, Al.
Went to Dr. 2 weeks ago, put me on antibiotics. As soon as I was done with them, started choking again.
I called the Dr. yesterday. He is sick! Can't see til Monday maybe.
YAY!

Roberta, I had to laugh when you said the doctor was sick. It just figures!

Get back on those antibiotics soon. You don't want the pneumonia getting hold again.

Feel better and have a restful weekend.
