Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi all! Finally I found some locals!

I have been reading the NY thread, and while quite informative it's not really relevant to us "southerners".
I am having an issue with a neighbor who claims our run is extended into his property.

Ironically he didn't complain while we cleaned out all the brush and a few trees, but when we gave him a gift certificate for dinner for being a good neighbor and not complaining! We are not very handy with carpentry skills, so we had our guy here this afternoon to help us figure something out. Our town allows for no more than 15 birds and no roosters over 8 months old. Right now I have 13 eleven week old birds (4 red stars, 3 New Hampshires, 3 EE, 2 RIR, and 1 BR). I have two roosters, but hope if we move them to the other side of the property, and keep them in till later in the morning, the crowing will be less annoying.

sounds familiar:/

We overlook the amawalk reservoir, on the Yorktown side of somers. Our property used to be farm land and after it had a bunch of summer cottages on it.

/We are actually right on 118... We are just getting started with our girls. I have always wanted chickens. The idea of walking out to my yard to collect breakfast eggs was always so appealing. I originally planned on getting them strictly for their production value, but since the day their fuzzy butts got here they have become our pets! Names and all! They hatched on July 5th, and we got them in the mail the following morning. We ordered from My Pet Chicken in CT. I figured the less distance they had to cover while shipping the healthier they would be when they arrived. We didn't lose one. How bout you?

I had a pair of chickens when growing up in Mahopac. 8th grade science project. They both turned out to be roosters. But now we started back in June 0f 2009 with an order of 28 RIR day olds from Murray McMurray. Every one lived. We kept the free exotic chick that turned out to be a Silver laced Polish roo and 6 of the RIR pullets and sold the rest locally. Then we hatched out 2 of their eggs they ended being 1 roo and 1 pullet. Then We added 4 more this June, 1 Buff Orp, 1 Barred Plymouth Rock, 1 Easter Egger and 1 Speckled Sussex. They are all doing well. Now my neighbor ordered 34 day olds and wants me to take a few. We probably will We love the whole idea of fresh eggs. Glad to see more locals joining!

Hi Newchick13, and welcome! Are there any markers on the corners of the property? You may have to consult a survey. Everyone has one, it's just a matter of where. Depending on how old the property is, it was at one time granite markers, going to concrete, and now the newer parcels have just rebar. You may as well do it right the first time, as people can be a little strange with these issues. Once your borders are established, The "chicken math" will kick in. Unless they have the birth records of all the roosters in your town, I don't think they will ever be older than, say, 7 1/2 months, yeah, that's right... that's how old they are, and I'm stickin' to it!
If you are building within your property lines, I would tell him KMA...

Hello, Alex the film guy.
I usually help out in these situations, but will be at the Queens county fair this weekend, and cannot miss work on that Thursday. If you can wait til Friday, I may be able to help. How many birds, and what breed/ color/ sex/ temperament are you looking for?
Feel free to PM me, Roberta

Hello Stoopid!

Unfortunately, we do not have the location that we need the chickens for on Friday, so it'd have to be Thursday. Thank you for the offer though!

In answer to your questions for others possibly interested, I'm not in any place to be very picky in terms of breed and color! Sex would be female and in terms of temperament, they'd have to be comfortable around people. Only one of our actors will be interacting with the chickens, but there will be more people around working on the film and so we wouldn't want the chickens to be scared or uncomfortable.
