Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Welcome, George. Glad to have another downstater on board. Looks like Long Island is being well represented.

Our little family is growing!

Thanks Al & Marianne. Marianne ... Medford's my home town. Grew up there. We briefly had chickens when I was a kid, but it was an experiment that didn't quite work (we kids got Easter chicks from a well-meaning relative and all of them grew up to be roosters, so they quickly went to live with one of my dad's friends from work who already had chickens ... and fewer neighbors!).

OK guys, JanetR Lives in East Hampton, and is having troubles with her homeowners association. Is there anyone who has had the same problems, and is there anything we can forward to her so she doesn't have to give up her flock? I know living on Long Island can be a little trying at times, but most of the time, it's great. Except for the taxes, and traffic, and....
Anyway, There was a big meeting about her chickens, and after all the stress, the HOA lawyer didn't show up, so she has to go thru this AGAIN.
Any ideas on how we can help her? Thanks! Roberta

Those can be tough cases to present and win. If she was supplied with a copy of their rules and regulations they will say you knew better. But if it were me I would find out the reasoning behind their ban on chickens. Weather it be noise, smell, fear of rats and mice and so on. Then counter their argument with facts explaining away their fears. Don't get defensive with the board simply be pleasant.

Hi everyone! My apologies for invading your thread, but I'm in a situation and am looking for help from some of the kind people in the Backyard Chickens forum! I posted in the newbies thread, and someone recommend I try this thread out since you guys are a little bit closer to me in Queens NYC.

My name is Alex Keipper and I'm a recent graduate of the NYU film program, an animal lover and vegetarian, and I'm preparing to shoot my undergraduate thesis film starting this week into next week in the New York City area.

The film is called Skin and Bones and it's the story of a young man working to support his mother and brother financially whilst simultaneously acting out aggressions as an animal liberationist. More than that though, it's about him struggling to raise his brother, fighting his own desires and insecurities, and discovering the place his ideals have in the world he inhabits. It's also about the food we eat, the connection we have to it, and what it means it eat or not eat animals. I've been working on the project for over a year now, and it's one I'm deeply invested in.

Our story calls for several scenes to be shot using chickens in a coop the main character has built and keeps in his backyard. While we had a caring keeper of chickens from upstate New York committed to letting us use her chickens for our film, she has had a recent emergency in her family that may prevent her from helping out. We're due to shoot these scenes on Thursday, and are now scrambling a bit to find another chicken keeper who may be willing to help us out.

If anyone would be interested, I would be eternally gracious. I already owe a decent amount to Backyard Chickens, as we researched our coop design using your website! We have a modest budget to provide some form of payment that we could discuss, and of course anyone interested would be reimbursed for all personal expenses. We would only need you for part of the day on Thursday. If you'd like more info on the film, you can visit http://www.skinandbon... or ask me any questions.
