Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Wow. Chicken drive-bys. What's next? Hell, I won't even drop off a coffee cake without permission...

Maggie: My mother has a big old Victorian and it was always cool because of the high ceilings. My house stays cool because of all the trees around. I think NY is getting hotter because people keep cutting down trees! Because we all know global warming is a myth. Ask the polar bears. They'll tell ya.

And no, it isn't summer yet. First day of summer = last day of school. If it weren't for these pesky bills, I'd be really excited. As it is, I'm looking forward to being home all day. Last year I worked until August without a break - full days in the heat with underprivileged kids and no a/c. It was fun, but I was exhausted. And I would have made more on unemployment. Learned that lesson. No camp for me this year. And I'm not even doing my other part time job, except Sundays. Bobby pointed out that the garden was an epic fail last year - I realized it's because I wasn't home to weed and water. And when I was home, I was exhaustified.

Went to HD today to get a couple of plants for the corner of the "L" in the chicken run. I put a pot there and I'm going to put rosemary in it. The girls won't eat rosemary. Must be too much like chicken seasoning! But I love the smell and it's an anti-mosquito plant. (Did you know that "mosquito" literally means "little fly" in Spanish?)

Can't wait for the rain tonight. The new backyard grass is coming in beautifully. I've already put down two full bags of seed. One more goes down when the second one sprouts. I'm shooting for golf course.

I put in the a/c unit in the bedroom window, which involved cleaning off the desk under the window, which led to changing the bed linen, which led to doing laundry, which led to replacing the tablecloth in the dining room. I love to accomplish!

I crocheted a RIR chick today. Very cute coloring. I'm going for realistic colors - none of this pastel, easter chick stuff for me. I've made BR, RIR, EE, Lav Orp, Buff Orp and White Orp chicks. They're all on a shelf staring at the bed. Bobby calls them the little soldiers.

You need to make a NN

The little soldiers are adorable! I thought of you today while reading an article in a Hobby Farm Home magazine. The woman saw a need to educate people about where our food comes from, and she developed presentations about chickens, eggs, cows, pigs etc and took them to schools. The presentations were 45 minutes long, and she kept control of the animals so they were not mishandled...and it was a nice way for her to make some money...and live her farm life.

So, so cute! I love your industriousness too. I tried to do everything on my list today as well. I did weeding this morning until it got too hot, then started again around 5:00. I discovered the dog does not like to weed, but does enjoy ripping through the seedlings, eating the radish tops, and generally creating mayhem. Out she goes! I have like another 5 hrs of work in the garden easy, and I kept saying, Ok, I'm done, must stop, oh but look over there, just a little bit more - then the giant grey cloud rolled in and it was like ah, right, got you - I'm done now. Thanks.

That's wonderful. I was watching the View this morning, and Michelle Obama was on discussing her backyard garden with the ladies. I wanted to shout out, "Hey! You need chickens too!" Apparently they have a bee hive. I had a brainstorm in the shower just now about starting a gardening / chicken program at a prison. Teaching prisoners to garden might go a long way in giving them ways to learn patience, kindness, gratitude, success, you name it. Plus the great thing about gardening is that any mistakes you make just go into the compost pile and become a part of next year's successes.
