Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Well, now that I'm all itchy reading about fox mange, here's the latest on Brutus. The sweet little orange boy was having eye gunk again, so I gave him another bath (no fleas this time) and checked his ears. Big time ear gunk too. Then I noticed the fur on his little orange ears was missing. oops. Back to the vet yesterday. No mange, thank God, but .... wait for it... ringworm. eeeww. Oh yeah, and conjunctivitis and ear mites, too.

Everything we washed to get rid of possible flea infestation has to be rewashed to get rid of possible ringworm infection. Everything he sleeps on is now covered in an easily washable sheet. Eye meds three times a day and skin meds twice a day. Another ear mite treatment in 2 weeks.

I read somewhere that having pets lowers your blood pressure...

Aw, poor little Brutus! I hope he feels better soon, and that you get some relief from all the stress!!

So, I went out to check the girls this morning, and it was COLD last night. I guess it's still chilly. They are piled in the coop like one big multicolored chicken. I get the stink eye from whoever is facing me, so I had to pull out the worms and forcing them to be outside in the cold was forgiven.

Chickens are pretty easy going when there's treats involved. Thank goodness. I'd hate for the chickens to not talk to me.

OK Heather our bird lady .............this was hanging out in my backyard saturday morning. Is it a blue heron? dh couldn't get good pics pf it as it kept moving away from him. Very tall!

So yesterday afternoon I notice my momma silkie from last year staying in her coop for hours. Yupper....another gone broody.LOL
This morning.....as I open up the door to let everyone outside....she stays back and waits for blue to get off her eggs....and jumps right on them herself!
Will they fight for hatching rights???

I still have 9 eggs in the bator...... Oh what to do????? Too many eggs and not enough fluffy butts. Maybe give her 4-5 cause she is kinda small.

chicken math tells me to get MORE fertile eggs right? How can I run a bator with just 4 eggs in it?
Not worth the effort in my eyes.

Oh decisions.....decisions......gotta think fast thouigh .

Maggie, I would give her the eggs in the bator to make the men happy.
They will steal, share, and brood together.
And share the babies after they hatch.
Good luck!
