Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Just returned from vacation to find all our chickens dead inside coop renters took care not sure how or what got in... 2 questions what killed them and how if they we inside and where can we find pullets nearby to purchase. Sad in Putnam county

So sorry to hear about your chickens. Try calling Clark Farm in CT for pullets. I think one of our fellow BYC'ers gave her rooster to this farm and got a really nice thank you from them...

Oh, Carol! I'm so sorry your trip home was so long. You have a big heart to have done all that driving. I was on the run up untill 8pm when we took Lindsey to see Batman at the drive-in. What a long day!
I had a great visit and was so pleased to meet you, Jenne, Jenne's mom, and ChrisF also. My daughter had so much fun meeting everyone and all the chickens. After we left, she talked nonstop about the birds and Jenne's gorgeous golden retriever.
Here are some pics of our succesful Underground Rooster Railroad:

I just found out my BYC emails have not been coming through! Here I thought you were all busy doing other stuff! Ack.

Welcome back, Caleb. The Broody Moms were getting mighty worried about you. And you and Al are killing me with the new dogs. I just said today that I want another dog. I'll spare you Bobby's response. It's a family thread...

Al, Boomer is gorgeous. I see Springer Spaniel, but that's just me. Sooo jealous!

Carol, I guess with that drive time it's not exactly a chicken drive-by, is it?

Valarie, so sorry about your flock. If they were shut inside and there's no evidence of predators, it was probably the heat. How heartbreaking!

It was great to see you all on here! I missed everyone - Caleb, Rich, etc., etc. Happy Anniversary all! What a great thread this is. Hats off to Al for setting it up - it has been a great source of support and friendship for us all.

I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather today. I got up at 7 am and did a complete coop cleanout. After a quick stitch removal at the doctor's office, we headed out East on the scenic route. We drove past our favorite chicken dealership in Smithtown (CFG BMW) and went to Agway, then Greenport for lobsters, then farm stands and ended up at the supermarket. We had a great time!

Poor Laura's got a bad ear infection from 3 nights in the dunk tank at the Fair. Poor baby. I brought her home an Apple/Strawberry/Rhubarb/Raspberry/Blackberry pie and some fresh peaches...

Oh! That was me! Call Melissa and tell her Chipmunk's mom sent you. They absolutely should have some pullets ready by now for sale. If you do go there, see if you can get a photo of Chippy, I'm missing him a bit.

I'm so sorry to hear bout the loss of your whole flock. I have to chime in my $0.01 - not worth as much since I'm such a newbie - and say it sounds like heatstroke to me. That or someone didn't refill the waterers until after they dropped. Everyone that visits our coop asks about how they handle the winter, but they're surprised to hear it's the summer that I'm more afraid of.

In the mean time, my white rock has gone broody to the point where she is now trying to hatch the polished white beach stones I put in the new laying box to encourage them to use it. She actually rolls the rocks from one side of the nesting area to the other and then sits on them. If you disturb her she fluffs her feathers and trills angrily at you. J. Lo is the equivalent of one of those single ladies that makes outfits for their kitty cats and pugs to wear.

I have to chime in and say that I love that there are so many kind, funny, generous people on this thread. I am an internet geek from WAY back, as in 1992 y'all, and this almost never happens. The fact that we all actually like each other in person as much as we do on line says something rather extraordinary. Collective pat on the back to one and all, and especially Al for being the catalyst that got us all together!

And yay! Caleb is back! The male: female ratio is now more like 2: 100 instead of 1: 100. ;-)

Since we're uploading puppy pictures - here's Duchess at around 4mos. She is posing next to her friend Daisy, who is a full-grown Boston Terrier for size comparison. She's getting better about the teething but we still have a ways to go in general. Check back next year, hopefully she'll be a bit more well-behaved!

Hey that reminds me, did you ever make the avocado pie? Was it good? Also, I finished the Daphne Sheldrick autobiography, wonderful book, thank you for the recommendation!

Yes, and it was awesome! 2 avacados mashed up with 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice and a 14 oz. can of condensed milk. Run it in the blender for a coupla minutes and pour into a graham cracker crust. Tastes like key lime, only not as sweet. And a lovely shade of green, too!

So glad you liked the book. Thanks belong to my mother, who told me about it. I just finished "Tigers in Red Weather" by Liza Klaussmann. A juicy summer read. Very well written, especially for a first novel. I devoured it...

Hey all you crafters... One of my suppliers has packages of googly eyes on clearance for .20 cents for a pack of 100.

If there is a certain size you are looking for, let me know. From 4mm round, to 8x10mm oval.
I've ordered a few of each "just because" like I need more crap in my house.

Caleb, glad you're OK.
Val, so sorry to hear about the babies.
