Hi all, living In Greenlawn, Long Island with my (shhhhhhhh)
hide.gif
13 hens. It's a long story of why I am over on the number of hens but there it is. Anyway, I order my Purina Layena Pellets and Crumble from Agway in Hicksville, NY and they deliver it to my doorstep for a nominal fee of $3.00! That's less than I would spend driving out to Port Jeff or worse Riverhead, not to mention the time it takes. I also order shavings and scratch. It is a wonderful thing to have the feed truck show up in my driveway, I gotta tell ya.

Regarding the posts about selling eggs, I haven't sold any eggs even though there were a few months where I was getting 9-12 a day. I have always given them away. Then last night, my husband mentioned that one of his coworkers wanted some more of our delicious eggs. Well, I have to say, I am getting a little tired of just giving them away. I don't mind if friends and family take them. There are always too many for us to eat and I AM ALLERGIC TO EGGS (I get debilitating stomach aches from them)! Buuut, my chickens are hard work. I am out there in all kinds of weather, up before anyone else, letting them out, cleaning their water, giving fresh feed and treats. And so on… when I said to him, I'd like to start charging a nominal fee of $3.00, he said he would not do that and would rather give me the money and give them away still. I am the one who spends money, time and energy on them and it's getting old. I am almost three years into keeping chickens and after 2 years of giving away eggs to anyone and everyone who will take them, I am tired of it.

Yes, I agree. My DH gives them away also. I told everyone that I would soon be charging for these yummy freebies, but so far it hasn't happened. At least I have a few that return the egg cartons!
And tell me about this delivery thing....

Yay! A neighbor! I'm in Huntington. DP and I were just talking about checking out the Hicksville Agway. (Okay, I was talking. He was groaning.) You're right - so worth the $3.00 charge. I only go out to Riverhead when I'm out there anyway, so I plan my shopping in advance. I'm new to this, so I don't know how often it will be necessary. I'm actually looking forward to the shopping today. But hey, I love home delivery.

I see your point about selling the eggs. Right now I got zilch - my girls are all too young - but if I had that many eggs and that many hens who cost me that much money, darn right I'd be sick of giving them away. How about you sell them to DH and then let HIM give them away?

I have ordered for my neighbor and a friend who keep chickens too, so sometimes have a good sized order but I don't think it really matters. I'll buy maybe three bags of feed for myself, plus 2 bags of shavings and that is good enough for them to deliver. I love them! They are Agway in Hicksville and their address and phone is: 150 Duffy Avenue, Hicksville, NY 11801-3640 (516) 931-0342. They do many horse farms on the Island, so do tons of deliveries and I guess throwing in a few chicken feed orders is fine for them. Hope that never changes. It is an awesome thing. I have no idea how I first found out about it. Maybe just by calling to see what kind of feed they had. I hated driving out east for feed, what a pain in the butt is was.

I found out about the Agway in Hicksville but wasn't sure they'd carry chicken feed. I mean, it's Hicksville, right?

Remember the Agway in Huntington? Now that would have been sweet!

Selling to DH would end up with me hearing about much money they cost!

Guess I will still be giving them away. I don't think people realize how much goes into chicken keeping. I know I didn't. Yesterday, the hens were being harassed by a hawk. I think he may have been after some rats we have back there, but they were freaked out for sure. I stayed with them and tucked them all in safely and stopped the inevitable squabbles that always happen when they go to roost at night. My hens have their own uncovered but very wild 1/4 acre that they get to roam during the day. Then they have an old coop built during the Great Depression to roost in at night and bad weather.

Oh yeah!

When we first moved to Huntington, I used to go there, we bought a Christmas Tree from them once. Then sadly, they closed down. Would have been awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

Be careful with that hawk! As soon as they figure out about the all you can eat chicken buffet in your yard, it will be hard to get them to leave.
