We didn't expect any of our ladies to start laying and had no nest box prepared for them. So we quickly ran out to PetCo and got this for our gals:

You can order this online in other colors for around $28.

How cool is that thing. I would need an orange one.

My sister and niece are coming down next week to see the chickens and go to the beach. My niece had to make a bucket list of things she wanted to do this summer and they are both on it.hope the weather is nice.

That is a hugggge pullet egg! Mine are about half the size of an established hen's egg.

About cracked eggs, my nest boxes are wood, and I had shaving in them. The hens did a lot of foot scratching, and many of the eggs must have clunked down hard and cracked. So, I went to Lowes or Home Depot and bought some of the by the yard carpet. I cut it to fit the boxes, and now they have cushy padded nest boxes. And I have eggs without cracks. If there is a messy mishap I wash and let it dry in the sun. So far this is working well, except when the youngest three chicks were prohibited from joining the bigger girls on the roosts so were sleeping in the comfortable boxes. Every day I had to go out before sunset and put milk jugs in the boxes so they would roost elsewhere. There is only so much carpet cleaning I am willing to do.

My six girls all use the same box. Once I went out to break up a fight and found 3 of them squeezed into the box. My babies also sleep in the nest boxes, but usually the 3 that no one uses for eggs. Once in a while I'll get an egg knocked out of the box, so I try to keep up with scooping them up right away. But I like the carpet idea.

I just finished cleaning out the coop. I love the smell of chicken poop in the morning!
