Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I just paid about $17. For 50 pounds of Purina at this feed store on Motor parkway ( cant remember the name) . He's close and seems like the food in this place really moves and the place is clean.

Looks like a double yolker to me! Congrats!:thumbsup

One of ours lays those every day. We call them Torpedo eggs. Ours have been all single yolk, though. Haven't had a double yolker since last year. They only did those when they first started laying. I guess once their system is up and running it becomes a rarity to get anymore of them.

Yeah, I was warned about the corn causing feed prices to go up.
2 weeks ago, I screamed because 50 lbs of Agway layer pellets had gone from $14 something to $16.
Yesterday I bought a bag of chick starter, was over $19.
And I need to buy feed again this weekend.
Considering cutting back on the birds. This is getting very expensive for me!
I stayed away from Purina because it was $18 back when I was paying $14.... I wonder how much that is up to!
:th

I just checked and TSC is $16.99 for the 50lb Layena pellets and crumble, and the same for the 40lb Plus Omega. The Layena was $12.99 a couple months back and the Omega was $14.99 last month. Looks like this is just the beginning. If they weren't using so much corn for Ethanol we would not be in this situation. Now, the price of gas is going to go up too because of the10% Ethanol that's used in it. And we thought that would go down after Labor Day.

It's probably going to get to $20 or more a bag real soon. You guys on Long Island may want to start a feed co-op and bulk order your bags.

Roberta, I wouldn't want to hear you have to downsize your flock because of feed prices. Hoping there is a way to get the cost down for you.

Hi, everyone.

I posted a question on a different BYC board (egglaying behavior) and got only one reply. I'd love to hear what the Southern New Yorkers' replies might be. I value your opinions.

Here's the link to my question: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/702370/egg-song-practice-hasnt-squatted-yet#post_9536986

(I could have simply copied and pasted my whole question here for you, but I think the forum rules say that double posting is not allowed.)

Thanks!

Carolyn, every single one of mine started doing the squat a week or two before they first layed. If you are hearing the egg song then you should either be seeing eggs or getting real close. Your BOs may not be squatting for you being that they don't like being held and are not seeing you as the Roo. At any rate, you should be seeing eggs soon. Five months is a bit long to wait. Just my thoughts.
