Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I'm all verklempt. Today is one year that my daughter's been seeing her boyfriend. He posted "I love you babe" right there on facebook for the whole world to see. They're talking about getting a house together and she and I had a long talk about her future (career-wise) yesterday. As my sister said on her kids' first day of school, "Parenthood is just one long journey of letting go."

Enough of this sentimentality. Time to clean the coop, which I've been trying to do for days. Then more envelope stuffing for my promo mailing. I promised myself the letters would go out today.

Yeah. Shoveling chicken poop cures alot. I need to do some healing myself.

I must be one heck of a heath nut then.

I just watched my chickens go after the neighbors cat. They pretty much had her surrounded and she flew straight up in the air and ran up a tree. They got some mealie treats for that. (and for not killing her-I'd hate to have to explain that one to my neighbor!)

You are a braver woman than I, Christine... I love my kids but not enough to be their teacher too. It's enough fun drilling good manners into them!

Hope that Daisy is ok! Tornados are frightening, goodness. Take pics if there's anything cool
We decided to homeschool because we were faced with the decision between 85 vaccine catch up doses or say "God told us not to vaccinate". I have problems with both of those options.Since I work from home we decided to give this a try. So far so good. Lilly is on day 9 of her curriculum after 3 days of time served... I am arranging a "homeschooler day" at space farms sometime next month. Should be fun. We will be discussing taxonomy (not taxidermy

) and then sending the student groups out on a scavenger hunt of sorts to categorize the animals they come across. Should be a fun day.

Daisy made it through that crazy weather and is actually feeling better! I cannot believe it, I have never had a sick chicken make it before. I did start them all on antibiotics just in case AND dewormed AND deloused AND gave supplements... I figured that if I can't eat the eggs for a while I might as well take the opportunity to worm them. As it turns out the 3 that got sick may have been eating the pile of white faced hornets that were in the grass after being exterminated. I asked my neighbor not to use poison, but apparently he did and it took a few days for them to fess up to it. He was also "kind" enough to destroy the nest that is on my property (not that I asked), right behind the coop, so I suspect that is where they may have gotten into them. Of course, it could have been some other thing, but it is just a bit on the coincidental side, don't you think?

Yesterday I got the tiniest egg ever! It was smaller than a quarter. I am guessing it was a silkie pullet egg, but I didn't know they were that close to POL. I have to figure out a way to post pics on here from my phone... I can't wait to crack it open to see how tiny the yolk is. I might have to cook it just to see what it looks like. Lilly thinks it would be perfect for a fairy's breakfast

Tina I checked out the breed last night when I couldn't sleep. Do you think they would have problems with frostbite with such large combs? They are beautiful birds, maybe next year?

I hadn't thought about the combs. This breed comes in a crested variety...could that help prevent frostbite? I'm going to inquire about the combs...

Good morning, all. They say the sun will be out by Sunday. oooo boy. Can't wait. I feel like I'm gonna start growing moss soon.

Spending the day with my daughter today. I have to say that, other than a little twinge when I hear the buses in the morning, I'm kinda enjoying not working. I spoke to my mom yesterday and she said my niece is coming up from Philly for a couple of days next week, and then my brother and sister-in-law will be here for a week after that. I LOVE that I'll be around to see everyone. Especially since they want to come visit "the farm".

So far I have 3 hours of tutoring scheduled per week. If I can add another 5, I should be in pretty good shape. Due to various printer disasters, I didn't get to finish the mailing, but I'm going to get as much done today as I can.

Life is good.

85 catch up doses? Jebeezus!! I vaccinate my kids and I don't think with all 4 combined they've had 85 vaccinations! You are a much better person than me-homeschooling! I enjoy spending time with my kids, for any and all sports. I have a feeling if I were to try it, they'd learn an awful lot about football stats and baseball players, loads of biology (my subject)...not much else. I do have one son who had fine motor issues, and one that has dyslexia, and I admit-I haven't got the patience to teach them myself.

I hope your girls feel better soon.

Still having printer issues. I moved the "new" printer up from the man cave, but now I have to run to Staples for ink. This project is turning into a PROJECT.

Of course, I must note here that the prior printer also had ink issues because I printed a boatload of crochet patterns off the internet. I have a problem...

I order my printer ink from Swapink.com they have the remanufactured ones waaaay cheaper than the stores.
And so far, no problems. My Epson takes cartridges for each color, they retail for like $30, the reman from these guys are like $7. each.
And free shipping over $50. Sometimes it is a treasure hunt trying to get the right part #, but well worth it.
