Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I am not going to knit dr today cause I have class
tomorrow anyway. I'll let you know when I do.
I want to shoot hawks with paintballs but I have
not yet seen one near my yard. I guess they stay in
the nature preserve.
I ordered mareks vaccine for the chicks when they
hatch.
I'm making French onion soup today. My eyes are
burning. Ouch.
cut under water or freeze the onion for twenty minutes ahead of time :)

Not to be a tree hugging, granola crunchy, PETA person, cause I am not... and you all might be aware of this already, but here goes, before we have calico hawks flying around, don't scare or otherwise harass it if it is on the endangered migratory bird list... huge fines if you get caught.

Here is a link to thread for permits for permanent removal of migratory birds including raptors, in case they become a real issue for you.
http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/mbpermits.html

"Legal Status

All hawks and owls are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 USC, 703-711). These laws strictly prohibit the capture, killing, or possession of hawks or owls without special permit. No permits are required to scare depredating migratory birds except for endangered or threatened species (see Table 1), including bald and golden eagles.

In addition, most states have regulations regarding hawks and owls. Some species may be common in one state but may be on a state endangered species list in another. Consult your local USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and/or state wildlife department representatives for permit requirements and information."

I tried to find information specific to NY, but was unsuccessful. I have 3 or 4 a day around here and I have trained my dog to go berserk when he hears them, but that doesn't stop them from buzzing our yard at a couple hundred miles per hour. It is only a matter of time before one makes off with a bird or two. We have the Harrier and broad winged version lately. I think they could make off with a small kid they are so huge...

We only have the red tails out here. They're obnoxious and plentiful. We also have owls, never SAW them, but I hear them all the time. I LOVE owls.

I rescued a sick great horned owl in my yard. It was just hanging out on a stump after being mobbed by crows. The local raptor center picked him up and rehabbed him. I am starting to volunteer with them (avian wildlife center) soon, they are such cool people. http://www.avianwildlifecenter.org/ I love the raptors, but fear for my chickies.

Oh WOW. I'd love to do that kind of stuff, maybe when my little one is older. I'm just so crazy busy at this point. My husband went to Probie school with a wildlife rehabber from queens. he has a bobcat that can't be released, hawks, all kinds of cool animals. He's a super nice guy-my daughter wants to go work for him, but until she gets a license it's too far.

He was on one of the Animals precinct episodes I believe with a swan or a goose that had been injured.

This place takes volunteers to clean and make cages, rescue, transport, scout release locations, computer stuff, fundraising, educational presentations, feeding, etc... I imagine I will be scooping a lot of poop and pellets before I get to do anything too much fun, but they are a neat group and are very close to where I live.

OMG... I am in the blood borne pathogens annual training for work and they just spent 10 minutes telling me how to wash and dry my hands.... next up: don't store your lunch in the fridge with the tissue samples... "do not mouth suction pipette" Geesh. No kidding. "do not reach into a sharps container"

"Remember, single use gloves are to be used only once"... Shoot me now.

Kinda of like the warnings on a ladder... I think they are required to have like 9 stickers, or some crazy number.
Just because people are idiots.

I would never in a million years shot a hawk. I figured the super soaker could get his attention and move him along.
The hawk looked down at my dog running around the yard like crazy as if to say "Really lady". I told him to catch the squirrel. I don't think that he could catch one if there were 20 running around my porch.
Orange is my favorite color though.
