Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

High school blue and yellow, elementary green and white. Seen that one a couple times on Facebook.

In light of all the recent hawk attacks...you may want to check out this video clip. It is amazing what a small space can be maneuvered by a hawk.
Jeez! Was that supposed to make us feel better?!

I'd recommend this video if you haven't seen it before -
--- something about the first five seconds cracks me up every time

And there is an hour long show that was aired on BBC called the PRivate Life of Chickens -

I haven't had time to watch it all but very interesting.

My daughter asked for a sewing machine for Christmas. I don't sew. I need help from all the crafty folks here. I purchased a small basic machine for her (us) to start on. Any good project ideas? How hard are those feed bag bags? Chicken saddles? Sources for patterns?

Square things! Like napkins, curtains, blankets.

Pinterest, it's the source of everything! I've recently got hooked, there are some articles I pinned for learning when I have time. Like the different stitches, what the different foots on the machine are for... My mom is the crafty type, I'm too busy to pursue my crafty gene, but would love to do all sorts of crafts.

Some fabric shops have sewing classes for young girls that might be fun . I think simplicity has a whole section of what they consider "simple" patterns.you have to wait till Joann's has a pattern sale or they are quite expensive.Singer also has a complete book of sewing . I'm sure the library will have it.

Go to a fabric store and check out the pattern catalogs. They have a section of simpler things to make. If she is interested in making a chicken saddle I would suggest a full size apron first. The smaller, tighter curves on the saddle are harder. Fabric stores would sometimes have preprinted aprons where all you would have to do is cut and sew. I don't know about the feed bag idea. I have not made one, but the attachment of the bottom may be challenging for a beginner, but if you have a lot of feed bags, it might be fun! Good luck to your daughter! I used to love to sew!!
