Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I am not sure if I was the person who made mention of that, but I do know that the lobelia (cardinal flower), Mondarda (beebalm), salvia, agastache, columbine, bleeding heart, and morning glories all will attract hummingbirds. I have a pineapple sage that they really love (trumpet shaped red flowers) and it tastes great in salads. I have also found that they like butterfly bush.
Well thanks even if it wasn't you! LOL
Someone here tries to attract them and I can't remember exactly who now.

Hi All
Haven't been on in a while.
Heather, I have many different gardens on my property and I name them all. I do think you should consider taking some of your plants and making it your NY garden. You can take a piece of a plant and in an established garden not even know it was removed .
Everyone has pretty much said it all. Having moved about 15 times in the first 18 years of my life just make sure you are constantly talking to your girls about it and how great an adventure it is going to be. You should look into one of those cameras for the computer so they can Skype to their friends when they get to Dallas. Maybe go shoe shopping for cowboy(girl) boots.
We are all here to help and remember some of us enjoy a good road trip

Finally my own eggs again. Buying them really stinks.

Check out these pretty hand painted dishes I found in my second hand shop. They still have their paper stickers on the backs and I guess someone got them and just didn't want them. Colors are much brighter in person.
Lucky me.

I am a "chick junkie".

Another T-Shiort logo Donna??

Thats a lot of moving Carol. Sheesh..........I moved a lot till I was about 35 myself. It was nice to finally settle down when my son hit 4.
But moving before children sure was a lot easier than when not having them.

Like a B&B.
Honestly one of the houses John & I liked best online has a 2BD guest house right next to the pool! So yeah, come on down!!! Just be aware that you will have to bring an entire suitcase full of salami, proscutti, cappicola, bagels, um, pizza?, Linden's Butter Crunch cookies, and a whole host of other goodies I'm convinced I will never find anywhere else.

He is down there now looking at stuff and so far we have encountered lots of gas wells (Fracking!), a gun range, and a bunch of HOA's, one of which allows cattle and horses, but not chickens? Eh, I'm not convinced I can't get away with anything I want to as long as it's in the backyard.

Christine I got an email today from Timber Press about picking the right plants for the right climates: http://www.timberpress.com/books/why_grow_that_when_you_can_grow_this/keys/9781604692860
I think I might just order it and see if it doesn't soothe me a bit. It's more that I'm bummed that I keep planting apple trees and peonies all of which take years to come to fruit and I'm gone when they really take off. Just like parenting I guess.

I am in the process of telling people and institutions what is afoot and the lady at the bank got teary actually. Which is nice to know that people like me? but I feel bad now. But everyone, like, everyone! is asking if they can come stay with us in the winter so I am just going to go ahead and assume we need a guest house, lol!

OH and for sure I am going to be at the Sussex fair in May. If I haven't squared away a good home for all of my hens to go to by then, if they're not coming with me, I may have to ask all of you to pick one and take her. I will divide up the food & supplies I have too. Ah, I can't think about that though. It's not until spring.

Yes, I will have to try and take some clippings with me. I am glad to know I am not the only one that gets sentimental enough to name their plants too! What a nut. I also have a lot of seeds that will come with. We have Macs here and they are all equipped with a camera already and this great program called FaceTime which we use to talk to cousins, etc. already. I am sorry for your nomadic childhood, I imagine that must have been confusing, but hopefully this is the last move for a long time. They have friends here but as they are just 4 & 5 it's not really anything they can't recover from. They are already coming up with names for their horses they will get (uh-oh) but that is not a guarantee. Sparkle and Sequin are popular. Drag queens or ponies?

OK....I am a new chicken owner. I put grit in a hopper for them instead of a cup and find that they are going through it at a much faster pace. I checked under the hopper and didn't find a mound of grit..... actually nothing. My Question is: I know they ingest the grit to grind the food in their crop. Does it get expelled with the poop? Did 't notice it in the poop. Where does the grit go?

I could consult all my books but thought you all would be much quicker.

Irene
