Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi, I am a crazy hummingbird lady and am starting seeds soon for the spring of various plants that will help supplement my Trumpet vine in keeping them around.

The major plant I have that really attracts them is the trumpet vine but beware, it's invasive.

I also have major wheeler honeysuckle that I just planted last year that didn't flower yet. Hope it starts this year.

Some monarda is better than others so research which to get.

I've also read Weigela can attract them…

Oh.... I got 3 eggs yesterday! This past 8 days or so my 2 pullet marans began to lay some really nice eggs. I'd thought they were laying creme eggs last month but it wasn't them. LOL I am such a nit whit........My buff orp laid her first pretty lt. brown egg yesterday and my silkie is back to laying nearly every day. My blrw is coming outta her molt finally, my ee pullet is crouching submissivly as of yesterday and I can't wait to see what color she lays.....Delaware pullet is looking like she's about ready to lay as well. Finally my own eggs again. Buying them really stinks.

What beautiful Eggs! I'd love some dark, brown eggs!

And also Lantana.

AND I threw down seeds (in the fall because that's when you are you' re supposed to) for orange flowered spotted jewelweed. Supposed to be a great plant which blooms in late August and is just in time for migrating ruby throats. It is not a pretty plant per say but looks nice in natural settings and low lying moist areas (ditches) and reseeds itself. It's also good as an antidote to poison ivy. Another name for it is "touch me nots" because the seed pods explode when being touched.

Congratulations on your eggs! Very pretty chocolate colors.

Thanks Donna!!!! I am so glad I asked............
I am in my home only 2 years and now the property is cleared, cleaned up and a couple of nice little gardens for veggies set up.
Now for the pretty stuff! I've learned the sun/shade patterns and it's good soil but very sandy in places and I need to be wise planting it right.

I love the trumpet vines.......Some of my neighbors have archways with them to their front doors and they are so darn beautiful.

I've gotten some nice hydrangeas started in big pots from last spring looking really good so far...perrienal grasses hopefully wointeriong over.........big pot of last year's elephant ears bulbs dug up and 2 big live pots of them inside for the winter..

And I do love Rose of Sharon which grows like a weed here as well.

I can't wait to get dirty. The hens are digging and turning the earth for me all winter where the veggies go so it'll be well fertilized as well. Gotta get my friends horse's manure soon and throw it around.

Come on spring!

Heather.....send me seeds or sproutings/cuttings of anything and I'll get some started for your new house if ypou like. :<) I'll ship anything you want. PO is right around the block and never a line if you can imagine that in NYC????? I think my PO is the smallest 2 window joint in NYC period. Like a mo- n-pop place and I love it.

Thanks Tina, I have never had an egg as dark as one of the girls is laying and sure didn't know what to expect never having a maranshen before..... It's darker than even the pictures show and is amazing.
Now I understand the attention they get....wow.
Now I need a couple of really true blue egg layers and I'm good for a while I think 10 birds is about all I can comfortably house unless I add more run space.

Good cause if they can take a bit of shade against my old stone wall..... I can plant it in the perfect place.
I lot 3 huge 100+ ft. trees in the storm.....and honestly now the shade/sun changes remains to be seen in my deep back yard. Ferns/mushrooms used to like it back there but now that'll change. Maybe for the better, ya never know.

Oh yea, forgot to add, jewelweeds LOVE shade. You should see them wilt in the sun. You'll have to research where to get seeds. I do know where some are and can harvest if you remind me next August, just remind me. Also hoping my seeds that I put down start to grow and that someday. I'll have a patch of jewelweed to gather seeds from, we'll see. I have one pesky hen that get's out and has been by that area. I'm hoping she hasn't totally scratched up my seeds and scattered them so they never grow. Those darn chickens!

I often go on the thread "my green thumb is itching, anyone else" or something like that and this past fall this guy Albert sent me a seed pod from the redest trumpet vine I have ever seen. I should have stuck some of them in the ground but got them so late I figured I'd wait. Depending on how well they do, I might have plants enough for everyone. The photos might still be up on the site.i have only ever seen orange and yellow.
