Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Would you believe that we were robbed today? I am actually sitting at my dining room table while my hubby is with the police officer taking pictures. The robbers tried to get in the back door but couldn't, so they went around front and kicked in the steel reinforced door. It broke open the deadlock. By looking at the house, you couldn't tell they were even here. They went into my dresser drawers, stole jewelry and replaced items back exactly where they were...so at first glance it looked like normal.

What a disappointment!

OMG. So sorry! Just can't imagine coming home to find that. Hope they find the Ba$+@£€$!

I have to tell you all about a slaughterhouse silkie I got yesterday. Oh what a learning curve I am on.

She makes me feel really, really good for saving her. She is learning to walk. ....if you can imagine that.

She is white & the size of a football. I am guessing maybe 4 months?

It's like adopting a little alien from another planet.Good grief it's an eye opener. knowing myself I will be getting into more mischief very soon.........even my sons and dh are talking to her and checking on her all the time to be encouraging. She didn't know how to act like a chicken and I am teaching her how to eat and drink lile a "normal" chicken. It's a bitter sweet feeling. I really think I might call her "little miracle" Because yesterday sure was her very lucky day.

I am taking all necessary health precautions and she'll be seperate from my gang and living in-doors. Thankfully she appears to be healthy and her weight /droppings so far seem normal.

Does anyone know if NYS laws determine if she likely came from NY....... or can poultry be transported over state lines?

I am very curious to know where she might have originated from. Anyone have any input??
Hi Mags When I was a kid we got our first chickens (live) from a slaughter house. It is still there off 86th st. Bklyn not too far from Spumoni Gardens. There are several all over Bklyn & on Long Island there is one I know of off Old Country rd. I stopped in there once & it was disgusting how they keep the birds in such small cages that the bird cant stand up. They had dozens of silkies

I know exactly where this poor girl came from in Brooklyn. And I now know they buy their birds from NY, Conn., PA, and NJ.
I am thinkiong they come to market at maybe 16 weeks or so.
I am happy to report she is adorable, eating well and "speaking silkie" to me today. I think she knows how lucky she is. She gets animated when I leave and then come back into the room. Running water sounds really get her going.

I have to decide if I want 3 more of her "sisters" (or brothers

) but with this cold I can't have them all inside so we'll see what developes...........

It is horrible cold out there today. I had to bring my Delaware (Sugar) inside for a quick warm up earlier and a hot meal before. She started yelling at me for her buddy Cinnimon so she isn't as cold as I had initially thought thankfully.
Todays menu included oatmeal, raisons and applesause all with some flax sees mixed up.
Then grapes for a snack. They sure do love grapes.

It's a race to see who eats the most.

My girls got oatmeal today also. Man are they hating this weather.if it keeps up much longer I think I'll leave the side door to the garage open by accident( wink, wink) the wind is going to blow it open I think. So I have to clean up a little poop.we have yet to park a car in it in 26 years . It isn't heated but it's much nicer than being out side. My little silkies are doing just great.they do make some cute noises.
Between the silkies, the girls coming from ideal and just finding someone to get Araucanas from (20+ eggs)in a couple months I couldn't sleep all night. My husband is going to kill me. I think telling him I'm winning them all will be pushing it a bit.hell want to know why I haven't won lotto yet.
Stay warm everyone

Mine got hot oatmeal today too. With a chopped up apple and also some flaxseed mixed in.

I'm using a heated water bowl for their water. It's advertised as a water bowl for dogs. It's a pretty blue and holds one full gallon. This is the first time I tried it and it's working great. I set it on top of a big stack of extra patio slates that I had. Hoping it's raised up high enough that the girls don't kick woodshavings into it. The bowl's electric wire (shielded with coils of metal so dogs can't chew on it) goes straight up into the air to meet with the heavy duty extension cord that I've got in the ceiling of the ChickArena.

Anybody else use aol as their mail service? Seems to be completely broken down today. Grrrrrrrrr. So frustrating.

I know cow ang pig laws. Poultry was a whole separate lab.
Because they would have to be able to trace infectious outbreaks. They would have to have paperwork that tracks you're "lotto" silkie right back to the hatchery.
She is one lucky baby.
