Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi guys! I am missing you all, haven't had time to catch up on posts being on vacation with the extended family here. I have to say I was feeling very proud of myself for timing a trip to Florida with this cold snap but now I am wondering how my girls are doing. Yikes. I will call the chicken sitter today and find out.

Where are the pictures from the congress?! I did love the partridge hen Donna took a picture of. What a beautiful pattern. Yesterday we went to Animal Kingdom here and of course there were lots and lots of birds to photograph. You can't take me anywhere! I tried very hard to not correct every person that called the spoonbills flamingoes. But really people, come on! Did you look at the beak? Plus the short legs?! Lol.

Tina I am so, so sorry to hear about your robbery. Please start checking eBay, Craig's list and any local shops right away. Especially eBay, it sounds like these guys know what they were doing. I remember a teen near me finding his stolen mountain bike on Craig's list and getting the guys arrested.

Mags I am so excited about your little rescue! One lucky lady indeed. Asian cultures like cooking with silkie chickens especially, there's something medicinal about the black skin. You know, just like powdered rhino horn cures erectile dysfunction. (insert eye roll)

Well I am thinking about getting dressed. We had quite the pee pee accident prone day yesterday, topped with vomiting across the bathroom floor. Gosh I hope that we don't have a repeat.

Mwah!

Heather, I was just thinking of you this morning! Good timing on the Florida trip.

Great idea about craigslist.

The funny thing about the rhino horn is that it's made of the same stuff as fingernails. So basically all those ED men could simply be biting their nails. And a lot of rhinos could be saved. Duh.

And I hope it wasn't you who had the pee pee accident and vomiting...

Mine got hot oatmeal today too.  With a chopped up apple and also some flaxseed mixed in.

I'm using a heated water bowl for their water.  It's advertised as a water bowl for dogs.  It's a pretty blue and holds one full gallon.  This is the first time I tried it and it's working great.  I set it on top of a big stack of extra patio slates that I had.   Hoping it's raised up high enough that the girls don't kick woodshavings into it.    The bowl's electric wire (shielded with coils of metal so dogs can't chew on it)  goes straight up into the air to meet with the heavy duty extension cord that I've got in the ceiling of the ChickArena.

Anybody else use aol as their mail service?  Seems to be completely broken down today.  Grrrrrrrrr.  So frustrating.

Hi Carolyn, that electric water bowl is a great idea. I have a double wall waterer on a heater which also rests on patio blocks. The girls always seem to manage to get shavings in the water. It is really bad if I throw a little scratch in the shavings to get them to stirring it around. The deep litter method has its drawbacks.

AOL has been running horribly for quite a while for me. And yes, the other day was the worst. I have switched a lot of my emails over to a Gmail account and have a much better experience with that. I've had my AOL account so long I just can't seem to give it up. It does test my patience, though.

Hi Al
How are you handling the cold up by you?
Stay warm

It was 6° this morning on the coop. The girls all came out looking fine and fluffy. Glad most of them are now through the molt. It is so cold up here that you really don't want to even venture outside to tend to the chickens or anything else. Just bone chilling cold out there. When it gets up into the teens it won't be as bad. I heard tonight it is going down to 1° or below. The wind is supposed to get here later on this afternoon. Tomorrow we can expect to get some snow. Wow, winter did arrive in full force!

Hope you and all are doing well. I haven't read all the posts lately and hope to catch up soon. I tore my bicep when I fell a couple months back and just now decided to go to physical therapy. It constantly hurt, and got annoying to sit and use the iPad. After three sessions I can say there is an improvement. I really thought I had blown out the shoulder, cause that's what it felt like, so I was not wanting to hear I needed surgery. I asked my rheumatologist to take a look and he suggested the PT might work. If I needed surgery then I would have to go off the Humira again and the psoriatic arthritis would flare pretty badly. Never a dull moment. Thanks for allowing me to vent.
