Hi Carolyn, that electric water bowl is a great idea. I have a double wall waterer on a heater which also rests on patio blocks. The girls always seem to manage to get shavings in the water. It is really bad if I throw a little scratch in the shavings to get them to stirring it around. The deep litter method has its drawbacks.

AOL has been running horribly for quite a while for me. And yes, the other day was the worst. I have switched a lot of my emails over to a Gmail account and have a much better experience with that. I've had my AOL account so long I just can't seem to give it up. It does test my patience, though.

Hi, Al !  I used to use a cookie tin heater for the water bowl.  Works great;  still have it, but I bought the blue dog bowl on impulse when I was in the pet store a few months ago.  The blue was so pretty, I couldn't resist.     As for the AOL, it seems to be working just fine today, so apparently, they fixed the glitch.

Stay warm.

I also do the cookie tin heater. It works very well to keep the water from freezing inside the coop as well as a little more heat for the girls. Very simple to make!!

Just so you know, I am in Florida. My mom had a heart attack and had a triple by-pass yesterday. She is doing great! Up and out of bed , watching her soaps and having dinner less than 24 hours after open heart surgery. She will be 85 in March. My husband is watching the dogs and the chickens. He even went shopping for greens for the girls! He doesn't do shopping!!!!

Now, he talks about the chickens, how beautiful, friendly and cute they are! If you knew him, you would be ROTFL! He loves how they eat out of his hand!!! Can I have a standing O for a new chicken convert?

Being able to keep up on here helps me feel connected back home. Can't wait to be back home.

So sorry your mom had a heart attack, but so glad she is doing well.

I wish I could convert my hubby. He is very fond of reminding me that this is my feathered adventure and he wants nothing to do with it. Of course, I did catch him cooing over the hen we have inside rehabbing from an injury. He just won't admit it.

I'm very sorry your mother needed surgery, but it sounds like she is doing incredibly well. Will keep her in my prayers. Tina

Irene, sorry about your mom's heart attack, but it's great that she's doing so well so quickly!

Bobby (my DDP) gave me the same speech about the chicken thing being all mine, but he built them a gorgeous coop and brags about them all the time. He converted a friend's husband, too.

I still haven't broken the news that the new baby chicks coming at the end of the month will have to be in the living room...

When i told my dh there would be chicks soon he just rolled his eyes and said "so you'll be building another coop in spring then?" And walked away. he is the one green lighted the game bird aviary, so why not another coop run (sharing the walls means less to build).

Sorry to hear about your mom but so glad to hear she's doing well. My dad had quadruple bypass surgery a few years back and boy, what a procedure it was and atough time he had. Your mom sounds like a trooper!
