Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi Suzanne, good luck on the exam. I'm thinking 100%. Had to do well in the math section with all the chicken-math that goes on here. LOL. :)

Yeah, I've gotten the blood spot too. Has nothing to do with a Roo. I can't remember what it was, but it is nothing to worry about.

Donna, those combs are definitely shorter and thinner than they were before, and also smaller than the girls who have not molted yet. I'm still not getting any eggs from the two, even though it looks like they've completed the molt. Just as well, we can't give them away fast enough.

Glad to hear from you Al. Sorry you haven't been feeling well.
Suzanne if you used chicken math you're in trouble.
Just finished a hat for my husband for Christmas.moving right along.next a bandana cowl that I found on Ravelry for Adams girlfriend.
When it rains it pours as they say. My dishwasher is broke.
Well when you can't do dishes you have to knit.....

Hi Guys,

Sorry I've been quiet, dealing with a really annoying cold that won't leave me alone plus John is away in Texas so I'm holding down the fort with the two little ones alone. I'm going to try to reply to all the open threads... (ha!)

1/ Welcome to Backyard Chickens NY Duck! We are all pretty much chicken owners on this thread although there is one fancy pigeon breeder that pops in occasionally and I think more than a few parrot owners as well. You are certainly welcome to hang out and pick up crochet tips though, lol!

2/ Al, I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well. Did I mention I bought the cookbook for arthritis written by a young top rated chef? I haven't really had time to read it yet but one of the key foods he talks about is parsley. Try a parsley smoothie? I'll look through it tonight and see if I can come up with one or two more appetizing recipes of his to pass on. I hope you can get back on Humera soon.

3/ Maggie I am sorry about your sick birdie. I too don't have anything useful to offer but I do know Terry Golson on HenCam.com recommends a bath in epsom salts when nothing else seems to work. At a minimum it can't hurt while you're waiting for the antibiotics to come in. I also had a pullet, our Speckled Sussex Perry Katie, get very sick for no good reason at all pretty much a month after she started laying. Because she was sweet and because I was just starting out with the chicken keeping I had her to the vet a few times. Long story short when she died we did a necropsy and it was cancer. There wasn't anything we could have done to stop it. Don't beat yourself up too much, things happen occasionally. Here's hoping she makes a full recovery.

4/ Suzanne I may have found a home for Ben. I was at Hilltop Hanover Farms tonight with the girls for their end of season pot luck supper and of course talked the ears off the two young farmers by the chicken shed. They have a flock of 25 hens, they weren't sure what breed they are but I suspect Red Comet and they were looking for a rooster to establish some social order and prevent them from pecking at each other. I emailed the head chicken dude Bret and told him about our thread so he may come and check us out. What I really wish is that I could take Ben after those hawk attacks. I suspect that would be asking too much of my neighbors though.

5/ I am sort of working on a holiday present for the group that entails a visit to the Bronx Zoo. I'm just going to assume that a Saturday is the best day to plan this unless everyone has a weekday that works for them? Basically it would take just about an hour and you would be free to stay at the zoo as long as you wanted afterwards. I hope I can get this together, it was something I had the chance to do for the first time this week and it was just amazing. That's all I can say for now.

I hope I didn't miss anything because that's all the time I have now! There is screaming from the other room now..... argh....

XOXO,
Heather

And would like to connect with local Long Islanders. Will be going to Florida next week. My husband will be tending the chickens while I am gone. Looking forward to your friendship, knowledge and advice.

Welcome!! Clark Farms is where I got my little Sebright, Nutmeg! I wonder if you happened to see a cute bantam cochin rooster walking about... that would be Chipmunk, who originally came from L.I., stayed with me until we learned it was a "he" then we took him to CT.

Always glad to have another good egg join our group! :)

Welcome to the thread! You've got some great chicken folks here that are in your neck of the woods. I'm in the Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park area....up in Dutchess County. My daughter and I have a flock of egg layers and we have also started a small silkie showing and breeding program. Looking forward to seeing you here on BYC!

Thanks for your kind words. It was late in the day when we picked up our chickens. Saw more cats than birds! LOL. My little ones are growing fast and range from a little buff orp to a large supposed to be an aurtralorp but think that she is an Ameracauna. Melissa husband did a quick grab and at the time she looked dark enough but now....... I don't mind if she is an Ameracauna even though I have another. Have sommuch to experience and learn. Thanks again for your nice welcome!

Harborview, Welcome to the bestest bunch of peeps on BYC!

Maggie... Got some good news, and some bad news.
Long story short, husband had a blowout at the post office and called me on my way to CT.
I told him to just take the box back home.
So I will deliver it tomorrow, it will cost us both way less than the post office.
Don't clean, or cook, or anything. This will be a drive by.
I still feel contaminated, and don't even want to step foot on your property.
And when you open the box, do it outside, or in the garage, a neutral area, and.... hey, ya know what, I'm gonna keep the box and take it to the post office and ask why they were being jerks.
I don't have the strength to type what happened. Apparently I packed it in a "regional" priority box which is not accepted here. They wanted hubby to repack it in a different box.
Oh the yelling that went on this morning!

I'll PM you in the morning, it will probably be before noon, as I have to deliver a baby parrot to his new family around 3ish.
