Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

i get some really awesome pics of them!! Ill have to post them somtime!
But yeah..i had a hell of a yelling match with my neighbor cause the bird shot from the hunt was hitting my house!
Oh please upload some pics. We all would enjoy seeing them.

We can only guess how wonderful their aim must be ....real expert hunters on the hunt.....sheesh...... stay safe.
OK, I know I have to shut up again..

I appreciate all the pheasant info, but I don't plan on housing them together. My chickens are barely domesticated anymore... they have been freeranged so much and even when they are kept in the run there is no top. I am planning a separate run/aviary/shelter for the pheasants with bushes and branches and such. I am thinking a trio or so of amherst or goldens. It will all depend on how the other projects go around here. The outside is finally about where we want it (one more shed to go up, so I was going to use the side of it to build the shelter/enclosure for them.

I just don't know about waterfowl. We have so many wild ones already. I live across the street from a lake and the canadian geese land in my yard all the time. I would love to have geese and/or ducks though.

(stupid question) Are geese considered a waterfowl? I'm used to seeing the "Mother Goose" type geese wandering around Stone Barns farm up here. Mind you, they are being raised as part of an experiment to make humane foie gras which makes zero sense to me but I digress. They don't have ponds or water in their enclosures.

I adore the Lady Amherst pheasants they are just so stunning. I bet you could sell the feathers to fly fishermen too.

Does anyone know if eating candy canes is bad for puppies? I'm asking for a friend, cause you know... oh well. I don't think she got too much of the wrapper anyway. :p

Oh don't worry, we are all thinking the same thing. I have friends that are real deer hunters, and they went on a "canned" hunt once and thought it was sad. They left. I don't think anyone that considers themselves a real sportsman would do something like that. My friend that raises pheasants for hunting releases them away from the pens.

Exactly......

I have to laugh, I've been around rifles/guns most of my life. My dad taught me how to shoot usiong BB and pellet guns early on.

My ex-FIL would go into Canada for moose and be gone for 2 weeks. Bear, dear, turkey you name it. He had the meats butchered up and it was great having the freezer full come those long and cold Adirondack winters. He was a good 'ol sports-man. He even taught me how to fly fish.

And yes feathers sell very well from fancy pheasants..... as I bought some at that NJ farm.

My son Chris and I bought my dh a georgous Remington rifle about 8-9 years ago. Well he shoots just fine..does the gun range stuff with Chris etc.......but tried his hand at deer hunting and Turkey season. Just plain doesn't like it.

So we fish.

I'm just fine with that. I'd rather shoot clay pigeons myself. I am not good at that though. Better at targets.

I do miss a good venison stew though.

Maggie, are you from the Adirondacks? I want to move there very badly! It's my favorite place.

I lived in Saranac Lake NY for years and went back n forth between the NJ shore towns with my first dh. He couldn't stay away from the ocean and the waves very long so we lived a bit of a Nomadic life. I have no regrets ....been a lot of cool places.. Its just hard living down here once you taste it up there in the mountains.

My heart is still there .....fortunately my sons have grown up spending vacations in a cabin on Kiwassa Lake when we can get away. fishing, snow boarding on White Face and Hiking Mt. Marcy trails. There is no end to what the mountains offer of you are active and love the outdoors.
My oldest son was born there. His grandparents owned a hotel on Lake Flower where they build the Ice Castle for Winter Carnival in Feb each year. It's a nice town to live in, just very difficult to make a living if you don't work a state or Federal job. Really.....really hard. I worked in the restuarant business and tended bar so tourism was another way to make a decent living. Lake Placid is fun to work in as well if you want to be around a lot of people and hub bub of biog $$ .LOL.

Hi Maggie, we rent cabins all over the addies every summer, usually within a quick drive (40 minute max) to LP. These past two summers we've stayed in Silver Lake in an old girls camp, such a cool pace! We were looking for a second place for summer and vacations but if I didn't have family here, I would move there in a heartbeat. We have looked around the LP/saranac area. Maybe we'll go when my husband retires. One can always dream. I just love the wildness of it. It's so beautiful.

I am getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

When I got divorced I moved back down here to be closer to my family so they couuld help me get started all over again with my 10 month old son. sigh.....that was 27 years ago.

my second dh works for the city of NY and did he not....... we'd have been up there a long time ago.

Do you like Blue Mountaion Lake Museum???? I love it.
