Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

My friends, family "estate" is on the Escer?? (spelliong) out on Rainbow Lake. I've been goiong there sionce aboiut 1978 or so.
I think there are only 1 or 2 on the east coast .
It has 2 guest houses we could all live in. One for the boys and one for the girls as well as a 10 bathroom great camp. All bedrooms have their own bathroom.
My dh does the plumbing for them when we go if there is one.LOL

A Victorian style lake house. I have no words but to say I want to live and be burried there. Not gonna happen.

Accessible by only snow shoes in the winter.

We used to do New Years Eve. fireworks out over the lake. Every guest/family had their own bedroom to sleep over with private bath if they didn't
want to treck out late at night. No heat but for fireplaces and wood stoves. LOL No-one cared by midnight!

1 nasty ppock/dirt road in and out from the paved road. Really long too and i've been stuck more then once and had to be winched out.
10 bathrooms all in a different colors. Can you even stand it? The seafoam green was always my favorite.

I am really home sick now.........
OMG! That sounds incredible Maggie. Now I'm really jealous, it must be spectacular! Do you have pics? my email address is [email protected] or maybe we can Facebook them. It must have been even nicer in the 70's. I want to see that place!!!!!! So cool.

How could he be carrying and none of your other birds are/were affected? Were they all vaccinated as peeps?
Of my flock of 11, Rhonda (EE from Roberta), Gladys (found), Lavinia, Helen and Ben (hatched here) were not vaccinated. The other 6 were vaccinated as peeps.

Ben's making a lot of noise. I need to either find him a home or kill him, like tomorrow. I can't have complaints from the neighbors - too many violations here, and Laura's an officer at the firehouse.

I may just have my friend's husband "process" him. I hate the idea - he's a beautiful bird - but the neighbors are too close and he's too noisy. No other options, though.

(stupid question) Are geese considered a waterfowl? I'm used to seeing the "Mother Goose" type geese wandering around Stone Barns farm up here. Mind you, they are being raised as part of an experiment to make humane foie gras which makes zero sense to me but I digress. They don't have ponds or water in their enclosures.

I adore the Lady Amherst pheasants they are just so stunning. I bet you could sell the feathers to fly fishermen too.
I am pretty sure geese are waterfowl, webbed feet and all.

It is hard to make that decision. Why do the roosters have to look so pretty and be so naughty?

Hi All; can't believe I haven't been on in a couple of days.been knitting my fingers off.
Mags, I'm sorry to hear about your girl.
Mareks disease is not transmitted vertically, meaning it is not passed from hen to egg. But other diseases are.
Sorry Suzanne that he is giving you so much grief.

Suzanne, I understand your dilemma....we have 2 beautiful splash silkie boys. They are really gorgeous and it's hard to part with them. I cringe every time they crow.

You won't believe this....

This morning when I checked on Lindsey's new black silkie boy, I thought that he looked a bit smaller than I recalled. When I picked him up, I discovered a gross, gooey right eye. He has lost weight and is sneezing. I'm going to try the Oxetetracycline that I have in Doc Brown's Emergency Kit and may even try the Oxine nasal flush.

I can't begin to tell you how discouraged I am. This is pushing me over the edge...to where I may no longer want to bring young or adult birds into our flock. This summer, our first attempt at purchasing adults was a disaster. The second attempt, with shipped birds was another disaster. And this guy is sick. Now, I know why some breeders practice extreme biosecurity and will only purchase eggs, when bringing in new stock.

I don't have the energy to keep caring for sick birds. This is really too much.

Our environment can't be causing this to happen with the birds. Our home is clean and all our other birds are happy and healthy. Even the surviving shipped birds are starting to look good. I feed these birds extremely well...the only thing that I can think of... is that silkies must have fragile immune systems. Doc Brown recently mentionned on the Chicken Whisperer Blog Radio Show, that when birds are stressed (due to shipping, showing etc) their fight or flight sytem kicks in, and the immune system becomes compromised making poultry susceptible to illness.

What a bummer!

Roberta, thank you! I mixed up a quart waterer with Oxytetracycline and took out a bit using a 12 cc syringe to administer some orally. Also, did the Oxine nasal flush (which dribbled everywhere). I am not sure how much actually went into his nostrils LOL. Lastly, ended up with VetRx on the nostrils ad comb. I put him under a brooder lamp to help his body conserve energy. I'm hoping for the best!

Tina I am so sorry! You seem to be having a run of bad luck. Maybe just wait til spring when everything is warm, I bet silkies are not as adept at handling the cold. Thoughts are with you....

I have been off baking and doing the other Christmas chores. I did finally trim the okra seed pods though, they are hanging in the garage drying. I'll send you some in the spring. I wanted to put the girls in the garden plot to turn everything over but the big red tail is still staking out the yard so not for now. :(
