my mil would agree, 3 sons no daughters. She doesn't get on with any of us (course we don't kiss up to her)and plays us against each other in mnya ways. But we know it.

That's too bad she plays y'all against each other. My Dad does that to his daughters and it's torn the whole family apart. Seems like that is never a good plan.
I try to be a good MIL... we love our daughter's husband. Our son isn't old enough for that yet, thank goodness..
You know Janey is already planning on getting a VERY BIG coop when we move to Texas and filling it with lots of baby chicks. That we will hatch from eggs, but not with an incubator, with a Silkie hen. Just when you think they aren't paying attention to you.... turns out they are busy turning into you.

Nutmeg laid an egg!
That's her egg on the left, and J. Lo's on the right. The scale is in pounds, but in grams it was 35
It had some blood on it (!) but I was assured by someone else that that is normal for a first egg. It was also down by the bottom of the ramp, nowhere near the nest box. I'm sad to say I didn't realize it until much later in the day, but her comb was very torn up. I think she had tried to use the nest box and got chased away by my Delaware Ruthie. Ruthie's egg was smashed as well, which means she probably stepped on it. Way to go Ruthie. There were a few Nutmeg feathers up in the roosting area too. Poor baby. I rinsed her off inside and put some Vaseline on the comb, and a tiny amount of BluKote just to try and hide the red so they wouldn't go after her again. I also noticed her toenails were very out of control, probably because they haven't been out for free ranging enough. (A juvenile Red Tail was sitting on the coop this morning when I pointed the chickens out to our listing agents). So naturally I managed to nick one of her cuticles when I trimmed her nails. Poor thing is probably going to hide from me for weeks now. I'm really thinking even though I have a lot of fly space for each bird that maybe mixing bantams and full-size birds isn't a great idea. Cinnamon is always hiding on her own in the roost when everyone else is out and about. I'm not sure if she's cold or just ostracized.
I hope everyone gets through this storm in one piece and with electricity. I know I'm going to lose it if we have school closure for another week. Please god no.
