Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

We're here in VT. Tomorrow morning we'll pick up the license, do a little hanging around (a/k/a shopping) and then the wedding is at 4. Laura is on her way now.
My beautiful bouquet (from my friend Nancy) and sparkling grape juice for a wedding toast (from my friend Susan). We have a fireplace in our room. Life is VERY good!

Enjoy each precious moment Suzanne!

Think I'll babble, too: Arriving today or tomorrow will hopefully be a Priority Mail box in the post containing 6 teeny Barbu D'anvers

hatching eggs! A local elementary school hatch project will hatch them, but I'll be welcoming the day-old chicks. I've never raised chicks before. My fiance has successfully raised many chicks and been a breeder of several breeds, but I'm going to be the one home by myself with the tiny darlings. (Trying not to read too many health-horror stories in the raising chicks section

) Anyway, I'm hoping to keep a friendly pullet from the hatch for myself, and to carefully place the others into loving, responsible homes as pre-spoiled, hand-tamed, friendly darlings. I'm really excited, I keep peeking outside for that white Priority box.

Their color pattern will be mille fleur.

I didn't mention that I'm excited, did I?

Good luck hatching, I've put mine on hold, chicken math is running rampant and I'm trying to hold on to my sanity ....lol
Hee hee heee!! You are going to want to keep more than one, trust us! Also, they are just plain happier with a buddy or two, so it would be downright cruel to not keep three... or four... or six... :gig Seriously though, they are happier as part of a flock so plan on at least two but three is ideal. Because -- and I say this as someone that loves, nay is obsessed with, chickens - they are fragile little creatures at times and sometimes we just lose one through no fault of our own. Someone on IG that I follow posted a quote from her Nanna: "Chickens are always lookin' for ways to die, sweetheart." I offer this to you before you hatch the chicks especially; please do not panic if one of them fails to thrive. It was nothing you did, they just don't all make it, especially as babies. Which doesn't mean we don't give them our hearts entirely too often and too easily anyway! MilleFleur is such a pretty feather color, I just adore it. Now please excuse me, I have to plan a quail pen for my new backyard in Texas... yep, we are now Texas homeowners y'all! If I am typing with a Southern Accent now that's why. :celebrate
Yay yay, best wishes ..and lots of chickens :)

Congrats, I hope that the joy you feel now multiplies as you share your lives together.

Heather! Can you sneak the quail into your Texas backyard? At least you will have a bird fix and those little eggies are yummy. Congrats on the closing!
Can I? Should I? Will I? How soon will I sneak them in?

So many questions.....

I think I will get the Lay of the Land first as it were and see just how strict the HOA is. Plus I may just have my hands full with the whole new house thing for a while. I am frantically getting locks changed, walls painted, wasps killed, koi fish fed - oh it comes with a pretty koi pond. That should keep me busy. They're pretty and all... but they don't give me breakfast, lol. Tell me why this can go in the front yard, but a pretty coop filled with gorgeous breeds can't?

(That's a pretend heron in the picture, but I have heard enough stories about these ponds being basically raccoon sushi bars that I'm not naming any of the fish.)

Enjoy your wedding, Suzanne! I'm so happy for you! Lovely bouquet!

Imprftme, that's a beautiful water feature. I do hope that you have just the coop set-up you're hoping for there, and that you'll absolutely love your new Texan home!

Messipaw, Welcome! Congratulations on your red stars! I have a GoldenComet. Prudence Cluckworth is very friendly, perky, and curious! She gifts us with an egg nearly every day, and she's our lead hen here. Here's Miss Pru!

"It's all about ME!"

Wow! Nice pond! It does seem odd that you cannot have a couple of little hens. Can you have an aviary? It is warm enough and it could house pairs of several species of gamebirds and a few finches.Generally game birds don't count as poultry or livestock, so you might be able to get away with it. Several types of gamebirds require a permit, but those are usually for the native game birds (ringneck pheasants and certain quail), if you keep exotics you don't usually need a permit (redgolden pheasant, button quail, certain waterfowl, etc). Here's to hoping that you find your bird fix once you get all settled in!
