Well Peri just started crowing

I hope he gets better at it.

When Omega 3 starts crowing I'm going to stud him out. I can't believe Ideal had to screw up on sexing her(him). He is such a timid rather awkward little guy. Im gonna ask Richard if I can put a diaper on him and keep him in the house...... Don't worry, I'll have a camera ready for the expression on his face..I just won't record what he says next.

This morning I was running outside in my nightgown and flip flops to throw a stinky garbage bag outside and spotted a mother turkey with her little poults in the yard across the street.
The wildlife woman had recommended that I wait until I see such a thing and try to get the poult "adopted".
Thus began my 6 AM Nightgown Mission Impossible.
Roberta, thank God there's a thatch of woods sparing your view.
I plucked the poult from his roost within the large dog carrier and snuck across the street. The mother was alerted by my flip flops so I had to shed them by the mailbox and ran like a half-naked madwoman, barefoot, with a now-screaming poult across the street and onto my neigbbor's lawn.
The mother, who had began to flee, stopped dead when she heard the poult. I set him down and darted out of view. He cried, she called. He cried, she called. Another poult came out of the nearby woods and my little guy took it as a sign to run for his life.
I waited a minute or two before I dared a peek and saw all of them together, walking nonchalantly down the long drive.
Yay!
And I only startled one person but he was elderly passerby. At least now he has something to talk about back at the Village.

Sweet. I'll have to leave my windows open so I don't miss all the excitement.
Those guys from Seizure Village have quite a network, you just might have disturbed the traffic pattern on our road for the next few weeks!
So glad they wanted to be together. Great sign. Turkey mamas are much better than chickens, that's for sure.

Hello,

Not new to BYC or Chickens. I live on the East End on Long Island. Currently I have 6 hens and have 15 meat Red Rangers plus 4 more baby chicks to add to the layers on the way in the mail. I am going to try my hand at raising meat chickens and see how that goes.

Below is my "Farm," Coop for the Layers, and set up for my meats that are coming tomorrow in the mail.

Good Sunday morning all!

So happy to be back from vacationing down at the Jersey Shore. What a mess everything still is there from Superstorm Sandy. You would not believe the damages. Sad.

I tried my hand at saving a seagull who was thrashing around on the side of the road with what looked like broken legs.

I was riding my bike and flagged down a truck who let me throw the bike into the back of the truck, borrow a pair of work gloves and pick up the poor bird so we could drive it to the beginning of the park where a bird sanctuary could pick him up and hopefully rehab.

It was interesting holding a seagull on my lap. Of course he pooped on me! Just like my hens! And he tried biting me a few times.

Happy to see my hens looking well, if not extremely hot. My pet/house sitter did an awesome job taking care of my two pups and chickies. She even cleaned out the chicken poop in the coop daily. I do that to keep flies down but told her she didn't have to do it too but I am so glad she did. No smell, no flies.

I never did find the two missing chicks, it's a mystery for sure.

Looks like three of my four cochins are girls!!! Hooray! There is one who is beyond a doubt a roo. His entire stance and comb scream boy! Oh well, looks like I will be looking for a home for a beautiful Gold laced Cochin rooster soon. Any takers???

At what age do they start crowing again? Though I have heard that cochin boys don't crow as much, wonder if that's true?

Happy Belated 4th of July!

Glad the little turkey found a parent!

Stay cool!

Semi newbie questions...

Our four 8 weekers have really taken to traveling on this holiday weekend vacation... Seemed to love the new country digs and clover... But I realize this exposes them to another flock and also the neighborhood wild turkeys...so my first question is, is there anything I should look out for in terms of symptoms in case they picked up anything?
At the moment they've never looked better and are eating like I've never seen before...
Question 2, is it possible their peeping presence could have inspired broodiness in one of the resident hens at our PA place ? Or is it just a coincidence that she decided to start now...?

Welcome Bryan . Beautiful set up. I hope your chicks arrive safely in this heat. I had terrible luck this passed spring with chicks sitting on tarmacs because of storms. Ill keep my fingers crossed for you.

Iwish I could do meat birds. I would just need someone to process them. Yes I am a hipocrite.i can't raise them then cull them. I'm sure this will get every one talking. I could raise them, give them the best 10 weeks a meat bird could ever want but I would have to have someone else do the deed for me.

Is it arrive safe or safely? My son the English teacher would be kicking my butt right now.
