Bees..That colony collapse thing, they think it may be due to all the chemicals, but aren't sure. I had lived out west for a few years, those Africanized bees were creeping up there. I know they won't make it here any time soon, but MAN they are scary!!
I want to go outside and play with the girls, I hope it's nice this weekend.

Mags house pic is on page 34. Roberta got in touch with me about the NY thread & lives on LI too. Mags you got me started with incubation & I have my sons old room filled with peeping chicks. Figures in the spring had such bad hatches & now every egg in the bator hatched. More eggs hatching as we speek from a broody hen. Got some nice silkie chicks (splash & blue). That shelve liner idea of your works nice. Havent tried the egg carton idea yet, I forgot what the idea behind that was? Gotta stop by one day and see your beautiful home. Just recently got back in touch with some one that I sold silkie chicks to & they turned out really nice. I got the chicks from you, eggs came from Angie I think in TX.

Come over anytime!
Yes, Angies got beautiful birds and my shipped eggs from her really had outstanding hatch rates. Her showgirls are adorable.
Egg cartons allow the peep to settle down into position and hatch out securely. And not get bumped and pushed all over the bator. I love it. they hatch amnd rest on the eggs for a while.
Just makle sure to trim out the bottoms and high sides to insure that the carton simply holds those eggs upright..... meanwhile gettiong air circulation as well.

My 3 bators have sat idle since last January. I've been formally advised not to fire it up again from all 3 men in this house. For now, the majority rules.

I'm sure by spring you can find a room where those guys of yours wont notice what going on. I just got this Eco Glow 20 chick brooder heater. It only uses 18 watts of power but really should have got two but then the cost would not have been cost efficient since they do go for$80. each plus s/h. Vin said that the red glow from the 250 watt heat lamp in the room at night is going to make people question what on earth is going on in that house?? but who cares I am the only "normal" one on the block. I will take you up on that offer one day when I am heading out to Pa.

Got my first egg today! Came home from work to find it in the coop. So cool!!! Not sure which of my two Japanese Bantam hens laid it, but my money's on Loretta, as she's larger and seemingly more mature than Tammy. The egg is a pale brown, and about half the size of an Extra Large store-bought egg.

Here's the egg:

Here it is in comparison with the Extra Large eggs I bought at the supermarket last week:

I am so excited about the first egg!!!

I have eggs all over the house, the worst that can happen, well, you know!
But really, as long as they aren't jostled around, they just sorta dry up, and hang out in the pile...
The smaller, the better
