Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I am happy to report that I was almost completely pain free all day. And I'm actually using both hands to type.

Today, Rhonda, the EE gave us two eggs - I found one early in the am and again in the afternoon. 5 eggs all together today.

If we are thinking of an order of chicks, I want a SLW and a Speckled Sussex. They will sex them. I got 3 from chickensforbackyards and they were all girls.

I definitely recommend Barred Rocks. My Wanda started laying on 2/14 - she hatched 9/26 . I calculate that at 18 weeks. And she lays beautiful brown large eggs every day. Plus, she's gorgeous!

We're gonna need a bigger coop.

Glad you are feeling better! It gets hard a few weeks out to stick with the restrictions, as you feel better you want to do a bit more than you know you should...but it is wise to pace yourself...being curtailed for a few weeks is better than having limited range of motion forever.

Good luck with all those cute chicks! I got two Buff Orpingtons under a broody, and am hoping that they sexed them right...one sticks it's head up when it hears something....the other one doesn't. They were feather sexes, whatever that is!

Good morning I don't know if it was this thread or not that I mentioned the Salmon Favs. I just checked several sites. efowl.com has a minimum of 15 free shipping for 2012 and does sell sexed females. You have to act quickly 'cause most of the sites are selling out fast on the rare breeds.I would like 6 females and could get to Westchester easily.

I just checked the site, duh, and you can buy most breeds by sex except for the rare ones, those you have to buy in straight runs. Of course I want Salmon Faverolles and that is "rare". If I order two and one or both turn out to be male, would anyone be able to take the rooster off my hands? Does anyone want more Faverolles than just a few? I was also thinking about a Welsummer or a Barred Rock.

What's an SLW?

Ok, so you want 6 female Salmon Fav's, I want 1 or 2 - we need to "home" 7 more. Any takers?

How's the gladiator flock doing? More blood?
They managed to forego the blood letting today. We just went to the Home Depot to pick up some wood to make an additional roost in the hopes they will spread out. There is blood on the top roost and walls from roost height down So, I know it had to happen up there at night where they pack in like sardines.

Hey Al, I have a 10 foot long roost for our girls and they still all smush up close to each other leaving 3/4 of the roost empty. There always seems to be 1 chicken that gets some sort of abuse from the others. So I'm not sure if a larger roost will help much.

We had some sort of attack today. I ventured out for a few hours of work (10-2) and when I came home I went out to see the girls. Shirley, the Golden Comet, was missing a whole patch of feathers from her back. They were blowing all around the yard, with one big clump in one place. I checked her over and couldn't see any scratches or cuts or anything. Agatha and Rhonda were hiding, and the others were huddled under a table in the corner.

We're sort of at a loss to figure out what happened. They were outside, free-ranging, so it couldn't have been a boredom issue. They've all been getting along fine - no pecking of any sort. The only thing we can figure is that it may have been an unsuccessful hawk attack - grabbed by the feathers instead of the skin? I thought maybe she got caught under something and pulled the feathers out trying to get free, but that wouldn't account for the others' panic.

Very disturbing. Bobby's very upset that something attacked his girls!

On a happier note, Wanda laid another monster egg. Just as big as her last ostrich egg. Ouch.
