Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

As far as egg layers go, based on the ones I have, Barred Rocks are the best. Beautiful dark brown, huge eggs. Very consistent, and great looking birds. What's black and white and red all over?? Wanda!

And such cute babies, too...
You buy them, I will hatch them.....
Just remember, shipped eggs only have around 50% hatch rate if you're lucky.
So you buy twice as many.......

BR is a Barred Rock, those are what George just hatched out.

Oh, George......any more babies?

Jeez, I gotta get that BIG incubator finished

I saw Greenfires prices

another reason to keep all the Orps and start breeding them

I bought a little crapbox incubator on e-bay, will see if it works, maybe will start a package with eggs...................
Oh ok. I'm getting a partridge rock. I think it's the same only in a different color. ?

I love the puffy cheeks on EEs. Like my Rhonda. And I'm putting together half-dozen of green eggs for my friends Kelly and Murphy for St. Patrick's Day

Hey Suzanne, and everyone else for that matter. I forgot to tell you about the free giveaway from Grit magazine, along with Purina and Green coops. It's a beautiful coop, and a year's supply of the Layena omega 3 feed. All you have to do is register and you are entered.

Here's the link www.grit.com. The top right corner of the homepage has the button to sign up. You can also do this by going to Purina's site. They also send you an email in a few days for 2 bucks off a bag of Purina chicken feed.

Hey, ya neva know...somebody's gotta win! :)

Thanks for the info, Al. I entered both that giveaway and the one for beekeepers (with my brother in mind). Also signed up for the magazine - looks great - and sent a birthday subscription to my sister-in-law. Not a bad 5 minutes work!

Just cleaned out the coop and found a broken egg. I'm hoping it was accidental breakage and is not evidence of egg eating. If it is egg eating, could it be caused by overcrowding and/or insufficient protein? (Even if it's not, I'm going to tell Bobby it's overcrowding and that we need to get that new coop up asap. )

We're heading off to Home Depot. I told Bobby I want to start on the footing for the coop today. I'm relentless! (It's part of my charm, unless you have to live with me.)
