All I can reccomend is you get another chick asap within 1-2 weeks of her current age. Your only little one needs a friend and will likely otherwise peep till you go out of your mind. I carried one lone hatchling in my shirt pocket for 5 days to quiet her down.....and learned the hard way till others hatched out. Phew.......they can be needy little buggers. And teachong the,m to eat right when they are an only is/can be a challenge.

Heather, I'm so sorry to hear about Ginger. I had my fingers crossed for her, but sometimes there's nothing you can do. Extra hugs and kisses to your girls.

I'll be hatching the lavender orpington eggs on 4/30 - 5/1 and will definitely give you one of the chicks if you want, but since that's 1-1/2 weeks away, maybe you want to get a chick now. I'll contact chickensforbackyards about a replacement, but I think their policy is like 48 hours or something. But maybe they'd be willing to do something.

Do you want to take Mabel (Speckled Sussex) or Blanche (SLW) to keep Tiana company? We could swap her back when the Lav Orps hatch. Just let me know. I'm off all day tomorrow and can take the drive to Harrison.

What about the CT show? You might be able to get a chick there. I'm actually thinking of calling in sick to my second job to go. As long as I get back for my 7pm tutoring session, I could definitely do it.

I have less than a stellar attitude toward work these days, can you tell?

Actually, at dinner tonight we kicked around a few ideas for a teaching related career. I need something that I can do part time but will bring in some money to supplement the tutoring. One idea: developing on-line SAT tutoring lessons on a pay-as-you go basis. My brother is a web designer so he could set it up for me. I wouldn't even need to do the instruction. Just provide a course of like 20-30 lessons and sit back and rake in the $$. Bobby has a friend who could design the Math lessons. I'd take a small cut from those too. Whaddya think??

And now the best news: We laughed over dinner about what the girls would be doing when we got home - sitting on top of the old coop squawking to be let in, waiting at the front door, etc., etc. And we almost raced each other to the coop to check it out. There they all were safe and sound inside. 5 on the roosting bar, 1 in a nesting box. I'm so proud of my girls for figuring it out. We didn't even leave the light on for them. Maybe tomorrow Shirley will have the guts to go down the ladder.

Only 6 more strips of roofing shingles and three sides of cedar siding and we're done. Add the window boxes and picket fence and Coope Diem will be the coop of my dreams!

Well, she passed. I was expecting that by this point but I wasn't expecting my 3yr old to burst into tears and sob uncontrollably. We've had lots of other pets pass away with no emotion from either one so it took me by surprise. The power of chick love I guess.
I feel bad for the remaining solo chick but as we're getting the puppy on May 6th I think they will be become best girlfriends. I hope. Sigh.

Maybe you could get 1 or 2 of them so the chick you have left won't be alone..Are threr any farm stores or Agways near you that has chicks.. I wish I could help

Roberta, that would be great! I am really reluctant to borrow beautiful Blanche or Mabel, just in case there is something wrong that I am doing. I will take a healthy bantam mutt baby. Are you and Suzanne driving together? I live right near I95 / Hutchinson River Parkway aka the Merritt so I can either meet you or give you directions to my house that shouldn't take you too far out of the way.

Not so many farm stores near me unfortunately. The last farm left this area probably around the 60's, to be replaced by McMansions and tract homes.

I checked craig's list, thank you for the idea. You are so kind to look for me. I also emailed a farmer that I buy bacon and pork chops etc from to see if I could have one of his chicks, but then I realized his chicks are probably all being raised outside by real mommas, not lightbulbs. He's very into pure food, refuses to use any GMO grains, raises all his livestock from birth to slaughter. Sort of a character but man is his stuff good.

I'm taking the 7:30 ferry out of Port Jeff if you would like to meet me there.I think they have parking for your car. I think it's around $15.00 for an additional passenger .(You'll pay that to get across the Throgs Neck) I have one friend coming with me and I have room in the car for 2 more

I'm really glad you have the coop as a little distraction from what's happening with your job. I feel terrible for you. My son just graduated last year and is teaching AP English at a charter school up in Boston. They hired him for only the one class. No benefits etc. Between the commute and the hours he is putting in he is making less than minimum wage.He is living below the poverty level and I told him he should be eligible for food stamps.Its not easy being a teacher No wonder you can't sleep. I think every parent should have to teach for one week and then they would have some understanding of what you face every day. Sorry if I'm ranting Carol
