Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

We had a great time at the fair. My mom was like a little kid! I wasn't too impressed with the chickens. The meat birds were downright nasty looking. Not that many birds. I guess I was spoiled by going to the NEPC Show in Springfield as my first poultry show. Nothing like it since...

Here's one cutie, though.

Tomorrow is Flea Market Day. Then I think we're going on the Maid of the Mist. Something else my Mom's never done.

Well, we're home from our last camping trip of the summer. Indian Island was exhausting but fun, and my Uncle passed away so I had to leave Riverhead and go to Brooklyn for his funeral. It was really just a service, because he's being buried in Israel (where my Aunt is from) and they'll be sitting shiva there too. It was very sad, I learned that my younger girl cousin (she's 42, I'm 45) is really quite mentally ill, didn't go to her dads hospital bedside or his service. My Aunt and cousin are in complete denial so me and my older cousin talked about it, and we're going to have to talk to my Aunt about some kind of treatment. It seems she's really OCD, to the point of blaming her thoughts of unhappiness for her fathers death, and then threatening suicide. Oy. On top of that, she constantly cleans and makes piles of stuff, and keeps moving the piles.
It was good to talk to my cousin though-we were close as brother and sister when we were younger.

On an up note, my boys started football practice this week, so I saw all my old football friends yesterday, then this morning, we went (my husband and I) fishing out of Captree with all our friends we grew up with. I didn't catch anything, but I do love fishing.

Tomorrow I have so much cleaning to do, I am NOT looking forward to it. Laundry is piled up higher than me, along with the kitchen which looks like a bomb went off in it.

Sorry about your troubles.

Hey rosie! My DH was on a boat out fishing out of Captree all day today! Boats name was The Fishfinder.
We had Fluke he caught for supper!! He caught 2 of the only 5 fish of legal size all day.

45 people and only 5 keepers although they did catch a lot of smaller throw backs. His were both 19". He and I will be doing a boat trip likely end of summer. He loved it out there.

Oo, purty! That's too bad there weren't many other pretty breeds. I have to say, I'm still in shock over the trimmed beak red comets at the NJ fair. I just assumed that was something only done by large scale production farms, I don't know why people would want to do that with their backyard birds. Equally I can't imagine showing meat production birds at a fair? Again I would think that was only done by the factory farms. Such a shame.

May the picker fairy sprinkle her magic dust on you and help you find that one special thing in the flea market! I'm jealous, that sounds like a great day. Maybe next time we'll coordinate and visit our family in East Aurora at the same time so you and I can sneak off to the flea markets together. FYI, East Aurora is adorable, and there's an awesome wood-burning bakery-restaurant-pizzeria there that I would live in if I were up there full time. Can't remember the name though.

I was on the Bay Princess! I saw the Fishfinder, and I commented that we should go on that one!

I caught 4 small fluke, a GIANT sea Robin,(It looked like a shark!) and probably 8-10 crabs. Nothing I could keep. My friends husband caught a 25 inch Fluke-it was bigger than him! I'd love to go back-we had such a blast. I have always loved fishing. We fish off the pier over here by the beach. I've seen people pull out huge fish. Not me though.

I did have the whole boat laughing yesterday when I looked at the 15 inch fluke and said loudly by accident..."I need something alot bigger" Most of the men laughed then looked rather embarrassed. A friend of mine said "sorry, I'm out"

A lot of the birds at the fair are auctioned off, so I guess that's why they're there.

Last night we went to see my brother's band, The Skiffle Minstrels, play. It was a great venue - right on the water's edge of Lake Erie. It's been cool and windy here, so there were big whitecaps on the lake. Unfortunately, there wasn't much of a turnout for the band. But they were great, as usual. They have a very bluegrass sound - lots of swing. My mom had a ball. She was dancing right up til we left at 1 am. I should be so much fun at 81! I'll see if I can post a short video.

I'm looking forward to the Flea Market. We went to an antique barn on Friday and I got a couple of great things. Nothing huge, just more of the little stuff I love but don't need!

Heather, that would be so great! Next year we were talking about doing the NYS Fair in Syracuse. How many of the BYCers would be up for that???
