Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi Sally I have raised 3different setts of chicks and have only used water. Knock on wood I have never lost one. They weren't very large groups 29, 11 and 6 this last time

The only time I used anything, I used Sav a Chick for the one hatchling who was struggling after a problematic hatch. I carried her around with me for a day and gave her water with Sav a Chick.

She's the grey one.

I use mostly just water. I had a shipment once that was
2 days late and the chicks that were still alive were very week
MPC told me to give them a little sugar water. I also gave
them gro gel for one day only.
If you use electrolytes make sure you mix exactly as the
instructions say cause if it's too concentrated it can kill chicks.
If you use grow gel, then do not give electrolyte water.

Your chicks may benefit from Sav A Chick...the stress of shipping can be offset a bit by the electrolytes. When your babies are old enough to leave the brooder, then you can start to add Braggs ACV (with the"mother") once a week to the water. At some point, if desired, you can add one capful of Red Cell to a gallon of water each week. Red Cell has selenium and other vitamins in it, that will help prevent a deficiency which can bring on wry neck. Red Cell is not necessary, but I use it as "insurance" to help keep my daughter's birds healthy.
I try to remember to add Red Cell on Sundays, ACV on Weds and then on Friday or Saturday... we feed mashed up, hard boiled eggs with a sprinkle of powdered milk on top for the birds. I think there is some belief that the powdered milk helps prevent coccidiosis. In all honesty, our birds are as healthy as horses. Even the hatchery layers we got from Agway have a beautiful sheen to their feathers.
Thank You all for your wisdom

At dusk I moved my broody back into the small
private coop and gave her a non fertile egg from
my EE to sit on. At least she isn't screaming.
If she is ok tomorrow and sitting on her egg I will
reconsider giving her some CL eggs.
I really want to see her raise some fuzzy butts.

I got 4 CL eggs today, they sent no extras

no extras coming with the second group of 9 either. I pray I get at
least one Roo and 2-3 pullets to hatch
so in the spring they can make more.
I took a pic of a CL egg next to white egg and my EE green-blue egg.

No flash CL on right

Wow, that looks like a big egg! Can't wait to see the chick that comes out of it.

I am happy to provide you with some fertile eggs, if you don't mind mutts. Just let me know.

Once again I am struck by how nice all the BYC people are. The ladies involved in the crochet swap seem like a really nice bunch. Rosie and I are all jazzed up to start. My brilliant idea to store yarn in the new cedar chest has been undone by 4 new huge bags of yarn that somehow got into my house when I wasn't looking (or more importantly, when Bobby wasn't looking).

I couldn't help it. Joann's had some great colors for dishcloths. It's a conspiracy.

I brought in some old stuff from the garage and my walk-in where I had stored odds and ends. Tomorrow I'll look at what I have in the new chest and the old chest in the bedroom.
This is getting out of hand.

I have been crocheting like a maniac. the colors are SO pretty!! Suzanne, Yarn is like a highly addictive drug. I went to Michaels and some crazy lady put all this yarn in my cart...and I bought it. I should have her arrested...but she looks just like me...

My husband worked 24 hours of OT last night and today...so I have a few hours this morning, after middle sons concussion appointment in which to find a suitable hiding spot. Good thing we have a NHPFD retirement dinner for a friend of mine that served 50+ years! So he won't be home, since he goes in for a regular 24 tomorrow morning. I'm certain I can find a good dark corner to put this stuff... I think I may need to rent a lawn pod soon to keep all my contraband.

This place is filled with awesome folks. I am convinced that chickens have a good effect on people.

You guys remind me of my grandmother with her stashing habit, she lives next door to my aunt. I would go to visit her and open a spare bedroom closet and michaels or rag shop bags would fall out filled to the top with yarn. I used to laugh at her because she would always tell me to hide them back in the closet so my aunt wouldn't yell at her. She is turning 85 this month and her daughters still try to clean out her house every few months of 'contraband'. She made a beautiful blanket for each of my children when they were born. I have twenty six first cousins and she made us each one as we went off to college. I remember when I had to go pick mine up from the postal center at stony brook....i needed help carrying it back it was so heavy. My dorm mate loved it and would constantly use it :) good thing she was also my best friend. I never learned how to knit (I tried with a knify knitter thingamajig) but I got confused. I learned one stitch on crocheting (the simple chain one)...went through two skeins of yarn just doing that stitch and then I put it away. I can cross stitch but I would love to learn how to quilt! My aunt is awesome at that and I always admired beautiful quilts.
Your stories are keeping me smiling as I wait for my chickies...I am getting sad hearing about people getting shipped doa babies.

Thanks but I found out how to break my Broody.
Put her in the broody coop overnight with an egg
and this morning my mom opened the door on her
coop (not knowing what I was doing) my silkie has
been running around the backyard all morning with
the other girls. Haha. She might go broody again
later but I just don't trust her with eggs now. Good
thing it was just one non fertile egg.
Now I have to clean the broody coop and put it back
in storage. Ugh.

The rest of the CL eggs came this morning :)

I'm going to set them tonight at midnight. Haha, so excited.

Ooh that's an ugly picture, makes them look grey, they are
blue. Slightly darker and smaller than the others, from younger
birds I'm thinking.
Still a large egg but the other 4 are XL. Which reminds me
I need to weigh them, and make up my weight loss chart.
Ooh this is fun.

Which came first, the chickens or the awesome personalities? I think we're all just plain good peeps.

I hope you ladies will seriously consider making some boobies for the post-mastectomey patients. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month after all!
I wish I was talented enough to do it. I wish I didn't live like hours from you all up here in Westchester so that I might actually get some lessons. Oh well.... there is always the apple sauce to make, the pumpkins to puree, the bathrooms to clean.... you name it I avoided it today. Too nice out!

I decided to dip my toe in the new media world again and signed up for a twitter account. I was told by a very smart woman on Tuesday that this is where all the media people go now for the press releases etc. and if I want a part-time / freelance writing job I had better be on it. If you're interested in following me, it's @hsealbreslin. Not that it will be rocket science, but I promise not to talk about pumpkin spice lattes, which my sister in law said all her friends were doing on Facebook this week.

Have a great Columbus Day Weekend everyone!!!!

I haven't got a clue about how to use Twitter. But I love Facebook.

I decided to blow off the Civil Service Exam tomorrow. I reread the testing requirements and I don't have the particular skill set I will need. I have another test on December 1 that I'm more qualified for. I have better things to do tomorrow than sit for an exam I can't pass for a job I'm not qualified for and which probably doesn't exist anyway. I could be crocheting! Or trying to find places to stash yarn! Or meeting Rosie for coffee!

Heather, we can make a date to meet up to have some crochet lessons. I don't mind a trip to Westchester. Or if some LI buddies want to brush up, we could have a lunch/stitch and ***** date here at my house. I'd love to host that!

I'll check out crocheting boobies, I promise.

I'm loving the idea of the granny square swap so much I want to start one of my own: traditional 4-round granny squares all edged in black. With whatever color combinations you choose in the middle. What a way to use up scrap yarn. I love the idea of seeing other people's interpretations/color choices. I suppose I could just make my own afghan like that, but it wouldn't be as much fun!
