Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I got 4 eggs today! The girls are all catching on. Of course it was one of those days that weirdness just seeped out around the normal. Chicken weirdness.

First, I went into the henhouse to see what needed to be cleaned. I turn around and I have 3 hens squatting, tails up, at me. ooookaaaay...
THEN, I check, there's already an egg on the top shelf of the house, still warm, nobody was fessing up, but it was PINK. Interesting...
So, I left the pen to gather fresh hay and DE, and Pine shavings..I go back into the hen house, and Diva and Lovey are SHARING one nestbox. Honestly, I have 6 nest boxes and a HUGE shelf in there. They have themselves smooshed together, wings and legs hanging out everywhere...man, to have a camera when you need one! I never do.

Then, I went inside to give them some privacy...

When I went back in, there's teeeeeeny little blue egg (Diva) and a HUGE PURPLE egg. What the heck? It's PURPLE. As soon as I get my phone charged up I'll post a picture. I also found another light light light pink egg. What are these girls trying to do? Out color each other?

Weird. So weird. Betcha that purple egg is gonna be mighty tasty!

I have 25 Meaties right now. I'm terrified of them. They are vicious, nasty, and man-eating I'm sure of it. Remember the velociraptors from Jurassic Park? yeah-that's them. I won't miss them in a couple of weeks. Cleaning their pen? I need a drink afterwards. These are not sweet laying birds. A drink and band aids.

That is what I hear. Don't sit too still in that coop...

Are they your first? Mine were "excess" roosters from this year's hatches, but I am not sorry to have a lighter load in the coop for winter and the hens are just greatful. I have had 4 of these boys in a tractor for some time now because they were just horrible to the hens.

Soon it will read: A drink, band aids, and a bowl of Coq au Vin...

I love it. My kids thought I was out of my mind putting eggs on the table to photograph them. Then they saw the purple egg. Too funny. now they all took pictures too. LOL!!!
Whatever breed laid that egg would provide you with a fortune in chick sales if you can reproduce it in the offspring. Can you imagine the flurry to get a "purple layer"?

Terrifying. They're my first meaties, and they were such cute little buggers. A week later-they became dinosaurs. They're Cornish X's. Maybe the rangers are nicer, because these little guys are just awful.

Gloves, eye protection, and boots. at the very least.

Lovey is a Buff Orp! I'd love to just get purple eggs, but this was her first one, so maybe she just doesn't have the brown shell formula right yet?

She's so sweet, I don't care what she lays, she a big fat fluffy baby.

At least they are usually too heavy (and lazy) to launch themselves at you

. Good thing they are not around for too long.
