I am working on a paper on Animal Enrichment for my writing class, and while I think the instructor meant for it to be about zoo animals, I took a left turn at Albequerque and am probably going to write on how to enrich the lives of chickens. There is the way we all treat our birds, and then there's the way commercial farms treat their birds. I have to stop reading the PETA website, I started crying and the girls were wondering what was going on. I think it's despicable that we treat the animals that sacrifice their lives for us with so little concern. Am I insane or is there an opportunity to get a bill passed requiring the major poultry processors to follow humane guidelines? Of course there is the possible side effect of too many laws; in the UK they have a law against feeding backyard flocks kitchen waste, which I don't get at all. supposedly a bio-hazard prevention?

If you're online and want to help with my paper, could you tell me stuff that you do to entertain your flock? Enrichment generally means providing social and emotional outlets for animals. Like, I have a CD, a parrot bell and a mirror hanging in the coop, and sometimes I give them a flock-block. I'm not sure they really play with them though!

Hi Heather, hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

My hens get to "freerange" so to speak on their very own 1/4 acre of property every day so they don't really need entertainment, they make their own. But when the weather is bad, they get treats and scratch inside the coop to keep them busy. They always have lots of different perches and roosts they can hang out on, they seem to like that.

I don't like PETA, They have done things that I find unforgivable.(Destroying years of cancer research by releasing the lab animals, etc) I do agree that animals sacrifice everything for us, and we don't give them the care or thoughts we should. But any time PETA does something, I'm so highly suspicious, I can't even think. They say animals are better off dead than kept as pets. REALLY? Poultry at the very least should have strict guidelines to treatment, feeding and housing. But many people in this world don't give chickens any more credit than a loaf of bread. Very sad.

The UK law makes me wonder...what is IN THEIR FOOD??? Biohazard?

OK, as far as keeping my girls busy, I am a little strange. I feel like they are kids that need to be kept busy with toys. I got them a little busy ball like they have for small dogs and cats, and filled it with wild bird seed, plain BOSS, or feed pellets. (agway has a 5 pound bag, it's regular feed, but the girls think they are getting something cool) I also place large pieces of vegetables like broccoli that will need some work, under the girls hay, then throw down some seed so they dig for the broccoli. One floret can keep them busy for an hour. I plant 2 for each and then some...

Yes, I'm an over indulgent mom, but I can't help it. they cluck at me a follow me around. I think they love me, and I love them.
