"Southernisms" and the Southern Lady

CoyoteMagic, that was wonderful; I loved it! I'd love to see it cross stitched and framed!

Other people who say, 'crick' are S. E. Oklahomans. Places like Antlers, Hugo etc.

About the 'Whales/Wells', my great aunt used to say she was, 'tarred' when she needed to 'set down a spell.' She also called one day, very aggravated, because of the problem with her 'tar.' It took me a minute to realize that she'd had a flat tire while out.

And yes, those accents just mysteriously come back once you are with/talking to, 'your people.' lol!

So, anyone going to share a 'mater sandwich with me? I have a ways to go before my 'maters are producing! (Then again, I could always just give up and have a potato chip sandwich until the tomatoes are ready! Is there any food that doesn't make a good sandwich?)

CoyoteMagic, you just ain't had okra, greens or grits fixed right!

After I posted that I thought that if you fried okra just right, you could prolly make a sandwich outta it....
But I may not be truly southern because I cannot stand boiled okra!! Slicker'n snot and 'bout as appealing.

And I thought I was the only one. I hate cold weather and cold wind. My family makes fun of me because I am always wearing sweaters, why they have to set the air conditioner to "freeze" I don't know. Humidity is the only thing that can get me into shorts, sandals and a tank-top.

"I ain't from the South, but I got here as fast as I could."

I grew up in Southern California, but people have ALWAYS asked me if I was from the south because of my drawl. I do have a drawl (I talk slow, drawn-out vowels, and mumble like crazy) but it is far from southern. I live in East Texas now

, it is so beautiful and I feel "at home" (now my Mama just needs to move here).

I don't believe that someone from up north could ever adopt a southern accent. I've heard people try to fake one but it just sounds dumb and why would you try to sound like your from somewhere you're not? You're either southern or you're not. If you're not don't try to pretend that you are. Southerners just make fun of you for that.

growing up in eastern KY , I've played in the crick catchin minners and crawdads with my cousins plenty of times. Only upon going to high school and finding out it wasn't proper english did the crick become the creek.
Most of my young adults years I tried so hard to correct my speech pattern , since as a kid the city cousins had poked fun at it. Now as an adult I am most proud of the way I talk and for the most part don't tone it down one bit. I just shake my head at the city cousins while I think of all the great things they've missed
