They can kill them because they're not compatible in the genital department.
My Orpingtons will do that too. They are not afraid of a little rain.

I don't know for sure. I don't think mine like being cooped up during the day, so we put up a big tent structure for them outside, about 12' x 4', and the australorps and RIRs use it. They are the princesses, and like their feathers dry, but my BOs just don't seem to care about being wet.
Mine stand out there but eventually go into the coop if it's pouring too hard. The ducks stay out and love it
