Splinting silkie toes

My late hatching silkie runt has curled toes on one foot. Ive watched several videos about splinting them. My question is how do you remove the tape and not pull the festhers off its foot. Thats gotta hurt! (All my silkie chicks have very feathered toes.)

Maybe if you lifted the tape a little and put some cooking oil on the underside of the tape it would lose its stickiness and come off easier? But you would have to get the oil all back off the foot to put more tape back on or it won't stick as good.
