"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

So out of 11 total in lockdown... 5 golden necked D'Uccles out so far, 1 Lav cuckoo D'Anvers. The other was DIS when i added some water and took some shells out... Did an external pip, but never broke internal membrane

So only one of my "special" babies survived

On a side note, Monday the dozen silkies and Mille Fleur D'Uccles go into lockdown... Not going to tell my husband about the 30 eggs I just received from the Post Office on Thurs...

The ones you got sound lovely. How about some pics?

@h2oratt How is your sick chick?

My 6 mushy chicks are doing great so far. Their bellies have gotten a lot smaller over the day. They are all eating & drinking & active so I think at least some of them will make it. I am giving them vitamins & electrolytes in their water. It smells weird to me but they like it.

The one I did the assisted hatch on is the weakest so I am not sure if he will make it, but like I said he is eating & drinking so maybe he will pull through also. Out of the 6 sex-linked eggs I got 5 boys and 1 girl.

This is one of the healthy ones, he is a lavender cuckoo orpington.

The power came on a few minutes ago so it was only an hour but the temp reading said 91 degrees inside the bator. The eggs felt warm though when I just turned them. Going to bed and hope and pray for the best.
That is good news. You know, the Brinsea actually has a setting on it for the eggs to cool a bit each day. It says that research shows this produces a better hatch. I'm not sure how low it goes, or for how long, but I think you will be fine. I know I sometimes open my incubator for about 20 minutes to candle all of my eggs for my students, and they are just fine. I'm guessing you will be ok. Hang in there. :)

Been reading along, catching up, this is what I would do since you have it.

Thanks, I was happy to see that when I took the eggs out and just let the Mini run, the humidity was about 62. So I think it was that I just put warm water in the trough.

Oh wow, some lucky people getting some pretty babies.
These are really cute! Congrats!

I have an Octagon and I didn't think it was that hard to clean. I only had 14 eggs hatch so maybe it was a small enough hatch that it wasn't too bad. And our kids could see the hatching very well!

GOOD LUCK!

That is good news. This was my first time with the octagon. I had my MIni Advance running at the same time. I LOVE the octagon. It really keeps things nice and even and that is helpful, because at school the building temps fluctuate quite a bit from day to night, and I know they are safe over the weekend too. I haven't had good luck with the Mini Advance yet, but I love it for hatching, so the students can watch everything happen!

You have your own eggs...?   Lucky!   I may have some fertile eggs coming up.  Caught my young rooster after my marans mix.  He's a marans mix..an OE, so I think I would possibly get some nice OE babies from her.   The collar is working on this boy!  Watching him, as he is still growing!  Making sure he is eating and drinking.  He is doing well.  First time a collar has worked like this.  He doesn't like how it feels when he crows, so he doesn't crow much at all.  I may be able to keep a rooster!
Ya I'm lucky to be able to keep as many roosters as I want. I live in the middle of no where lol. So I get about a dozen to 15 eggs a day right now. I'm so happy for you your rooster collar is working out!! It's awesome to be able to just grab your own fertile eggs when you want. I also have breeding pens. So if I ever want to isolate a certain breed I can. But I usually just sell the barnyard mixes on Craig's list. And they don't last more then 48 hours before they sell. So I get to keep hatching as much as I want. Or at least as long as they keep selling. It's not much money for mutts but they pay for the feed and let me continue to do what I love HATCH. Good luck with your Roo. I hope you have your own fertile eggs very soon.

Ok dropped another full egg turner full of eggs last night. And still have my other incubator from eggs set on the 27th. April sees a lot of chicks in her future lol.

Oh no- I am so sorry about this! I hope they were from your own flock that you can set again!
No I didn't mean dropped them on the ground. Sorry I can see now how you could think that. I meant dropped them in the incubator to hatch. All the eggs are fine. But thank you for your kind words. I would be devastated if I actually dropped them.

UGH. Guys, I am freaking. out. Help?

I moved my eggs (due on Sunday, today is Friday/D19) to the hatcher yesterday on Day 18. Increased humidity, laid down clean paper towels, everything.

Well, the paper towels wicked up water and the humidity shot up to 85%. The damp paper towels TOUCHED all the eggs.

I removed the paper towels and put some rice in the bottom of the incubator to try and absorb some humidity. The windows are fogged up. I have no pips, so I have wiped down the windows to reduce water surface area. It's still around 78% humidity though. I'm worried...
I agree with your others here- take out the rice bc it will continue to absorb your moisture. It's too early to worry about the eggs getting a little moist.

Back to the caffeine IV for me! LOL

4 hatched and moved to brooder. Then I heard an egg in the bator chirping. I guess I might get another one today. I have to fix the heat source for the brooder. The lamp clicked off for no reason then turned back on. I put some hothands warmers in there while I figure it out.
