Squishy crop!

As your chicken eats throughout the day, its crop will get bigger. That is normal, yes. If it is still full in the morning, before he has had anything to eat, then it may be a problem.

Sour crop and impacted crop are different and should be treated differently. Only in extreme cases of impacted crop have people had to operate. It sounds as though all is well though. Definetly do a search for the two on BYC. Its always good to be informed.

Nothing in the crop this morning.

So glad to hear that it resolved itself!

I have a similar problem where my Comet has had a bloated crop for the past few days. It feels like there is air in there. I have massaged it a few times, gave her yogurt with some added probiotics, also some bread with olive oil (though she ignored this), and am out of ideas.

The crop is definitely bloated in the morning, and grows as she eats and drinks throughout the day. Her breathing is a little labored when she lays down, but if I weren't aware of the problem, she appears to be otherwise fine and full of energy.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Hi everyone.

There has been no change yet in her crop - it's still squishy and swollen in the morning. I have given yogurt with probiotics a few times, added grit to the food area, and added ACV to the water (1T/gal) and that seems to be going fine. She is eating, drinking, pooping and laying eggs, and she runs around like normal - she just looks like Dolly Parton. Which isn't good, even for Dolly.

Can someone describe the proper procedure for massaging a crop upside down? I'd like to try it again because the rest of my efforts don't seem to be working.

Thank you,

~Kristen

I just got back in from doing this. I didnt get it all though so it has me worried, BUT all I did was turn her on her side and upside down and squeezed and pressed the gunk in the crop downwar to the ground (upward toward her head) and it eventually will drain out. It is weird, but after a bit comes out right her back up and let her rest a bit.

Hi,

Upside down as in holding her body or via her feet? How many minutes should I try this? For about 3 minutes, I held her upside down by her feet, resting her back against my legs and massaged left to right, and then squeezed in a kneading motion from the base of the neck toward the head. But nothing came out so I stopped (I'm afraid of "popping" my chicken!).

And am I massaging back and forth or kind of squeezing on the way toward the head. I'm afraid to squeeze for fear of rupturing something. Do I massage the entire time, or...? Anyone know of a YouTube video?

Thank you!
