Take it easy Mary.

Jason - so sorry to hear about your rooster. Maybe try the t-posts like I did in my runs? I haven't lost any birds to hawks since then. (though I did have a couple of attempts - moved t-posts around after that) Use the t-posts to block any flight path out. A hawk can come straight down to grab prey, but it needs lift to get out - so it needs a flight path. Stagger them and make it a hawk obstacle course. Hanging CD's can help too - the reflection of the CD's make them think it's fire.

Well, I am miffed. I called my dentist to see about getting the points ground down so that I can close my mouth on the right side. She is CLOSED for the next 12 days! Her office is being remodeled and they don't have electricity. Didn't someone think about that before allowing me to have $8,000.00 (in cash) worth of work done yesterday? Couldn't they have offered me an appointment after the remodel? I asked if she could recommend another dentist to fix the high bite and she said no one else will work on another dentist's work. What about having someone on-call? My **** jaw is aching from not being able to close my mouth for crying out loud. She told me that if they got the electric panel back on she'll give me a call, otherwise I'll need to wait at least 13 days.

Guess I'll be eating soup through a straw for awhile. Oh, and she told me they tried to get it right yesterday but that after several tries I said I was numb and couldn't feel anything anymore. Oh yeah, blame the numbed and sedated patient!

Off to pop pain meds and cry.

My I suggest a call into the BBB?

Can we discuss the "fishing line" option for a second or two?

How does this work, if the hawk can not see it does it still deter them? Or are they just getting caught in it when they try to grab the birds?

I have been thinking of covering our pens some how...but they are big, and short (was originally for ducks...then I got chickens) so I am having a difficult time finding something I can afford.
She said that the fishing line would catch the sunlight and make it glow when viewed from above.....thus creating a "web" effect. She said that it was verified by a pilot friend of hers that flew over her property and was able to see it.

Cooper, the only thing I have found that works against hawks is to cover the runs with netting.

This is a close-up view of the section that drapes over the side of the run. It is 2 inch netting with small knots. I bought it on eBay. I found the best prices and availability of sizes on eBay.

We still need to pull and hog-ring attach it to the fencing but you get the drift. I bought a 100ft by 100ft square piece of aviary netting to completely cover the 5 side by side runs which total 75ft by 75 ft. That was the closet size I could find. We put up 6ft fencing so the net sits right on top of the fence and then we pull it over the sides and attach it. Nothing has gotten through and the black netting is almost invisible to the eye from a distance.

Here's a link to the seller's eBay store: http://stores.ebay.com/Pinnon-Hatch-Farms?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

Oh, and it's made in the USA!

Oh how awful! It seems they really should have mentioned they would be closed, before scheduling and doing the work.

Cooper, how small are your small runs? We are thinking about removing the netting over the runs at the house we are selling. Maybe the pieces would work for your smaller runs?

Oh Mary, that is just wrong.

And it doesn't matter if you are numb, they just use those pieces of marking tape (like seamstress marking tape). You "tap-tap-tap" and they can see any spot that is bumping. You need a new dentist.

Mary, I'm sorry I am out of vicodin. The last time I had any was when the dentist pulled a molar years ago, leaving an empty spot the size of the grand canyon.

I did have my second cataract done yesterday and they asked how much valium they gave me the first time. I said oh 3 or 4. Well they looked it up and it was just 1 I tried, . I wanted extras in case you might need them someday. That's what friends do.
