I ordered the dozen dark egg layer assortment from My Pet Chicken for my spring layer flock. 14 eggs arrived today in good condition. Here's what I got! The breed initials is written on the egg and they included a chart for us old folks.




So, chicken math accounted for, I should have three new chickens to add to the flock. 50% hatch, minus 50% roos, equals 3.5 pullets! I have some sizzle eggs coming for my granddaughter so I will wait to set these until tomorrow.

Thank you for the info. Fishing line is a good idea in the smaller run.

I've been asked by NOTAFARM how I put up my Monofilament line over a whole 1/3 acre orchard. I have an 8 foot wood fence around two sides of it. The big coop, which is about 50 feet wide including the roofed run, is on another side. 4 pear trees in a line make up the 4th side of the square with a 4' fence behind them.

In the middle of the square I put up a 10 foot tall piece of 2 1/2 inch PVC electrical conduit with a 3" eye bolt in the cap. I put screws to hold the 40lb. test line every foot on the covered run ends and side, and on the 2 sides of the 8'tall wood fence. Then strung wire 8 feet up between the pear trees to the fence, and to past the gate into the run.I attached more line to those wires to completely cover the area. It looks like a huge shiney maypole from the air, according to my neighbor pilot. He's promised me a photo, which I'll post. Just like this * the star key.

So far a big red tail female has landed in one of the pear trees not 25 feet from my husband. He said he could hear her muttering, "Nope, not a way in there. Not gonna risk MY wings !" He now thinks that this was a good idea too, but one heck of a lot of work. Just one more large area to finish covering for the other runs......

I do also have all my decideous Hydrangea bushes under the maypole covered in bird netting too, for added protection. Just in case....

I never leave my office without a back up. EVER. If I'm out of town, I have another dentist covering for me. I do the same for them.

It can mess with your jaw if you aren't biting even, and sometimes the damage can be done at night when you are sleeping and you aren't aware that you are grinding to get them even.

I would do a semi-soft-liquid diet until you can get them fixed. Rinse with warm salt water and peroxide to help the gum heal. 1/3 peroxide to 2/3s warm water with a couple of piches of salt. mix and then rinse back and forth in your mouth for a minute three times a day.

Got my Ideal Poultry Crested st. run. DW had to work with me today so we didn't get the call. I got up late so I didn't call the PO. 6 of the 30 were dead. Oh well. I picked them up at about 1PM. They didn't bother to call the house until Noon. PO killed at least two or three in my opinion. They were thinking they would get dehydrated so they opened one of the holes and splashed in COLD WATER.

MORONS.

Anyway, I figure I'll add about 6 hens to the flock out of the 24. 12 (or more) will be roos and then I'll pick the prettiest 3-6 pullets and sell the rest.

I know I got one Crevecoer, 1 motled Houdan, 3 sultans, 4 WC blacks, 3 WC blues, 6 Silverlaced, 1 Golden laced, and 4 unknowns... I'm imagining they are buff laced. 3 of the dead ones were red crested reds. made me sad. also, was hoping for some black crested whites... NOPE>

The jury is still out on two that were near death... but they've been watered and warmed and are looking MUCH better than when I got them home.

I called Ideal and they said they would refund my credit card for $10. Whatever.

Guess that's a part of life.

Oh Mahonri I am so sorry. That is the saddest thing to open a box and see little deceased babies. I would love to splash cold water on the postal worker myself! Good grief. Have you decided to have them re-shipped? It may be getting late in the season for just six to travel safely so they will probably fill in with little cockerels which you don't need.

Thanks for the dental head's up. I am not going to wait 13 days for this to be fixed. I am going to call around town tomorrow and see if I can find someone willing to help. I went to the other house today to clean coops. In sweeping out the screen porch, I realized that I have no choice but to inhale everything I sweep up because I can't close my mouth. Try closing your mouth and keeping your teeth open for a few hours. Not easy. I called Michael and told him I was on my way home. I am not inhaling three coops full of chicken dust and dried manure.

I have no plans on keeping any of the sizzles. Sarah said she wanted some silkies for her daughter so I bought six sizzle eggs. Now she says she just wants layers. Guess what? She's getting all the female sizzles too! Or I'm throwing them over your fence in the dark of night.

wait a minute.....if sizzles don't count as "chickens" you can have as many as you want, right? Kinda like calories eaten while alone.
