Yikes Rinda, good luck on staying local. The word move sends chills down my spine. This one has shaken me to the core. The pics are just adorable!

Just wondering - Mary, how many times have you moved since you've been on BYC? I'm kind of new to posting on here ( I was an occasional lurker for years) so am not up on all your moves. In fact, I probably never would have said a word (I'm kind of private) but I just loved the humor and banter between all you "regulars" on this thread!

Was it hard to move all the animals? I ask this because we've been thinking of downsizing (we've been here 36 years!) but the prospect of what to do about all the livestock (not to mention 36 years of "stuff") is daunting!
Rinda, I sure hope you don't have to move - you've got a lot of chickens! and bees!
I'd love to hear moving tales if anybody has any.

You should ask Cetawin. She moved from Oregon to Kentucky five years ago with all her chickens and ducks in the back of a moving truck, in winter, no less. I know she has a thread on here talking about it, with photos.

This will be our third move since we got into chickens. We kept trading up to more property, more animals, more coops, more feed, more work, and less money for retirement. My health is poor and Michael got sick so we decided to downsize to a more manageable house with just enough property for a few chickens.

I moved 8 times in 13 years, not counting the twice yearly moves in college. Each move involved purging a lot of stuff - sometimes I would move things that had not even been unpacked. Apart from family heirlooms I learned to give up a lot of that stuff. I have found that the longer you stay in one spot, the more stuff you have to sort through, so 36 years is probably going to be a big job. And having a big garage (or other storage space) definitely contributes to the sheer volume of stuff! If we do eventually move to Florida I am honestly not sure if the chickens will go too, that is a looong road trip. The bees and horses definitely not. The dogs and cats definitely go.

I never had to actually move chickens but I did move a herd of goats when I moved here which is only about an hour from my previous house. I brought them up in the back of my station wagon a couple at a time. Station wagons in those days were big enough for a 3 room apartment!

Mary, how is it all going? The latest house you are interested in looks great.

I never moved with chickens (or a cat, which we have now), just two dogs. Both Cody and Kes were alive when we moved here. We've been here 13 years now, the longest I've stayed anywhere. We are currently sorting through a load of things in the basement in preparation for a potential move in a few years, but I'd just like to be able to use that 800 sf down there for something other than storing crap no one wants. There is a bathroom and it was divided into rooms and sheetrock glued to the block walls, I'd guess to make an in-law suite but it was never completed and there is no heat into the basement-would have to install a wood stove or connect the ductwork (though we never use our heatpump so the latter would be useless for us)

I couldn't take living in the flatlands. I refused to even go to south Georgia, where my husband has a lot of relatives, back when we were searching. We'd go north over the border into Tennessee. I just want out of this state if I ever leave this property. Should have stuck to my guns when we moved here but we found this bargain property and we do like most things about it, except that I can see two other houses in winter, though one is below us so mostly just their roof. And the steps up to the deck and the main floor. No more of those, ever. That was a mistake. I'm happy Mary is getting a house w/o that problem. She'll love it.

Mary has had 4 houses (going on 5) since I've known her. Moving chickens I'm sure is simple compared to moving emus and a donkey that is afraid of the trailer.

This move is certainly the right thing for them to do. It's time for them to enjoy themselves and not be tied down to animals that will need high dollar care.

I hate moving just because of the volume of stuff you accumulate over the years. So I've been in the same house for 15 years. If I ever did move, it would be out of this state.
